Good morning!

I would love to have to ability to search for recipes when I click into an indexed book.  I have a few bookmarks I like updating when a new title on my bookshelf has been indexed.  For example, the recently-indexed The Best Quick Breads is on my bookshelf and I wanted to search that book alone for recipes containing pumpkin. I do have a work-around, but it would be great to simply open the book link and search from that screen.  I hope my explanation makes sense!  If not, let me know and I'll do my best to clarify!

Thanks!

Bonnie

Good morning Bonnie (and it is a beautiful morning in our part of the world)

You can currently search for recipes by individual book titles.  Just enter "The Best Quick Breads" (including the speech marks) in the search terms box.  Thern use Only Show filters on the right and select pumpkin by clicking Ingredients, Vegetables, Pumpkins & squashes, Pumpkin.  You will then just see all the recipes in that book that contain pumpkin.  Alternatively, you can enter pumpkin in the search terms box after the book title, which would give you the same results in this case.

In general though, you get more precise results by using the Only Show filters. The search terms box looks for the word you enter in recipe name, ingredients, author name, book title, e.g. if you enter chicken in the search terms box you also get chicken stock, chicken of the woods mushrooms, chicken bones, recipes in books with Chicken in the title, etc.  The first selections will always be where the term appear in the recipe name.  But if you select a type of chicken in Only Show filters under Ingredients, Meat, poultry & game, Chicken then only that ingredient will appear.

Thanks Jane! I had a feeling there was an easier way and I was coming up blank. Let's hope this sunshine stays and the cold goes soon!! :)

I tried the other night to pull up a risotto recipe that I know is in the 1997 Joy of Cooking. I entered "'joy of cooking' risotto" in the search field and only got one result, but there are six recipes in the book with "risotto" in the name. (I also tried it without quotes, and when I just enter "joy of cooking," I get 1500+ recipes.) Any ideas?

I just signed up for EYB a week ago after seeing it referenced on a blog. I'm very excited about it - I had been hoping for the last few years for a resource like this!

Hi tunnymowg

Welcome to Eat Your Books, I hope you find it a great resource for getting more from your cookbooks.

What you're doing is sort of correct.   "Joy of Cooking" is in quotes as that's the name of the book, you only put in quotes words that actually appear together and then Risotto.   So the search box it would look like this:

"Joy of Cooking" risotto

However, we have just uncovered a bug that is preventing some recipes from showing.  This is now fixed and will be released in the next couple of days.  Sorry you've experienced a problem so early on.  We aim to be as 'bug-free' as possible so thanks for letting us know the problem you were having - it's not always user-error!

The current 'work around' of putting the book title in quotes in the search bar certainly works. It just feels like a work around and less ... elegant than it could be.Would it be possible to implement a book title filter in the "show only" filters? Or a 'search this book' function from the individual book pages?

Thank you guys for all the hard work which goes into the site!

Thanks Fiona! I did enter only "Joy of Cooking" in quotes - it just looks funny above because I put the entire string in quotes so it would be clear but "Joy of Cooking" in single quotes but I guess it wasn't obvious. :-) But anyway I did try:

"joy of cooking" risotto
and
joy of cooking risotto

and got only one result both times. Hopefully whatever bug is causing this problem will be fixed soon!

Hi Tunnymowg,
When I tried this search the other day ("joy of cooking" risotto), I got 11 results, so it looks like the bug's been fixed!

Apologies didn't do an update post on this one - we did a release a couple of days ago that did fix this bug.  Thanks for all your feedback - it really helps us keep the site as bug-free as possible.

We're always looking at ways (well the developers are!) to improve the way search works - they've made some significant changes so hopefully you'll notice some improvements in speed.   As Jane mentioned in another post, we also added the "Date Added to Library" sort option for books in this release.   So if you've requested books to be added to the EYB Library, through Import Books, you can easily check to see if they've been added to your bookshelf.
