If you could only have one Ottolenghi cook book which one would you get? I haven't read or used any of his books yet and I'm interested in getting started with just one.

I have definitely cooked most from Jerusalem (28 recipes), followed by Simple (10 recipes). I think one of these would be my choice- I think it depends on whether you want more traditional Middle Eastern ingredients (Jerusalem) or some twists (Simple).

Thank you Barb!  Eventually I'd like both.

My favourites (in no particular order) are Jerusalem, Simple, and Sweet.
For me, both Jerusalem and Simple get used all the time, mostly for savoury dishes. The big revelation though is how much I love Sweet. It's my favourite baking book that I own; I'm not really an expert baker but everything I've tried has been good to great so far.

Jerusalem is the book I've cooked the most from out of all my cookbooks. But I love middle eastern food! Simple has grown on me and it's for a good variety of recipes.

Eliza thank you for telling me about Sweet!  It is one I hadn't given much thought to, but now I'm adding it to my list!

Thank you for your input.  I appreciate everyone's suggestions.  It sounds like Jerusalem is a good place to start!  I'm sure I'll end up with all of the. Eventually.  That's how I play!

Jerusalem is a really special book. I also really love Plenty More.

Simple for me - I like consulting Jerusalem but I don't often actually cook from it.

Hands down, NOPI.  I have made almost everything in that book and everything has been great!!  I have almost all of his books.

Jerusalem, Simple and Sweet.  (But love the others too!).

The first Ottolenghi has a good range of recipes across all genres. It's a good start.  I love them all but didn't think Nopi would do much for my repertoire so don't have that.

My favorite is Plenty. In fact, I’m cooking Very Full Tart this weekend for the third time for a couple friends.

1. Jerusalem

2. Sweet

3T. Flavour

3.T Plenty

5. Ottolenghi

6. Simple

7. Nopi

8. Plenty More

A highly personal list. I haven't used Nopi much and am only just beginning to dip into Simple despite having had it since the day it came out in the UK. I don't find Plenty More appealing at all but I love the newest book.

This may not be the kind of answer you want, but a good start is his column in The Guardian. It gave me a feel for his palate, interests and scope. I moved on to the cookbooks from there. There are days I'm drawn to Jerusalem, days I'm drawn to Plenty, and days I'm drawn to cheffy stuff - but I still go back to The Guardian on a fairly regular basis. The groups of recipes will start me thinking if nothing else.

Because we index the Guardian supplement we have a lot of Ottolenghi's recipes already indexed - 1,760 of his recipes have Online Recipe links.
