Spicy Apple Bars - recipe from the 1970's - anyone have it?   Go to last post Go to last unread

My Mum used to make this recipe quite often when I was a kid, and I have been craving it recently.
She told me that it was copied from a magazine, and if I was young at the time, it would have been around 1975 - 1980. We lived in the UK at then.

The recipe was very much like a shortbread base (but wasn't shortbread), and had thinly sliced apples in a spice mix (like cinnamon, mixed spice, brown sugar etc) on the top. They used to get chewy when they baked, and the whole thing was incredibly moreish.

I know this is a HUGE longshot, but does anyone else remember this snack?

Be prepared to be amazed!!!  I've just looked in one of my oldest cookery books and have found a recipe for spicy apple bars! No idea if it'll be the same recipe, but if it'll be allowed here I'll happily post a photo of the recipe?  It's in The Complete Farmhouse Kitchen Cook Book published by Yorkshire Television in 1984.

danibattle - Susan_F sent the recipe to EYB and I have forwarded it to you.  I hope it's the right one, or at least close to it.

Amazing, y'all are the best - nothing like enabling a food habit ;)

I will let you know how I get on, as I am planning to make these next week to see how close they are. I also sent the recipe to my Mum so she can try it as well.

Thanks a million!!!
