Well we have 160,000 books in the EYB Library and spine color is not data available anywhere else. So it would have to be a member added feature. I'll add it to the development wishlist!

The best way of dealing with this would, I think, be with bookmarks. I use bookmarks to tell me which shelf a book is on, as do a lot of other members. Bookmarks are a versatile tool for catigorizing or finding your books.

Jane and Avocet thanks for your swift and thoughtful replies. This should keep the R&D division ( codename Deborah) happily occupied. Avocet that's a super idea I'll look into it. 

When a website appeals to the kind of people who understand the paradoxical joy of applying structure and form to that most emotionally engaging of manuals, I doubt that it comes as a great surprise that those from all along the CDO spectrum clamour to be able to categorise by age, sex, nationality, marital status, church, size of book, number of pages, or absence of tomato.

Thank you for giving my cookery books a new life. I have lifted the self imposed ban on buying new ones.
