EYB Indexing: When does a Variation, usually noted only in Comments, become a separate Recipe?   Go to last post Go to last unread

A big thank you to the EYB Indexer who separately indexed all the cake variations in Snacking Cakes by Yossy Arefi. Because of this a cake recipe that was just what I was looking for came up in an ingredient search. If the ingredient, in this case chocolate, had only been noted in Comments I would not have found it. So: Answer to the question: 'If a Variation has a separate title and/or is listed in the Index as a separate recipe it should be indxed as a Recipe and just not noted in Comments'.    ???

I'm not sure why this wasn't done before but I have now added a section to the Indexing Form Instructions on Recipe Variations. It states:

If a recipe has significant variations then it should be listed as a separate recipe in the index. You can tell if the changes are significant if the extra recipe is given its own title or if it is listed in the book's index. Small suggested options such as a different protein or spice would not be enough to warrant a separate listing but do always note optional major ingredients (e.g. the main protein or vegetable) in EYB Comments. If there are a lot of optional ingredients just add the comment "See recipe for variations".
