I often do a search which might go across multiple pages. I then want to narrow them down to the few I am interested in and then select between those few to cook. So a selection feaure would be useful where I can say - choose this recipe - and then later provide a way to see all of the chosen recipes in one list. I don't see a way I can currently do this.

That feature is on our developers' (very long) to-do list. In the meantime you could add a Bookmark and name it something that will make it appear at the top of your Bookmarks list e.g. **. Then tag any recipes you are interested in and at the end use the Bookmarks filter to just see those recipes. If you are not familiar with Bookmarks, check out tutorial #4, accessed from the green Need Help? button at bottom right (not available on phones). Or take a look at this Help section.

Once you have finished your search you can delete that Bookmark from the Bookmarks page (under the My Bookshelf tab). Of course my suggestion only applies to a recipe search of your own Bookshelf as the Bookmarks feature is only functional for your own collection. If you are doing an Online REcipes search of the Library this suggestion will not work.
