You index Diana Henry's Sunday Telegraph blog/column. However, there is a paywall. Why, then, don't you index The New York Times, which also has a paywall? I subscribe to the latter and would love to see those recipes listed. Tx.

Diana Henry is an author that we have produced a complete recipe index for (you can view all those authors from the link at the bottom of the filters on Library REcipes). This means we have indexed all her books, her newspaper and magazine columns, and as many online recipes as we can find. We do the same for several NYT columnists - Melissa Clark, Mark Bittman, Ottolenghi, Dorie Greenspan and David Tanis.

The NYT site has a huge number of recipes and we have indexed many of them - 6,138 to be exact - but we don't have the resources to index all the output of every newspaper's food pages. Members can add any online recipe that they want on their Bookshelf, using the Bookmarklet.

So it's not about the paywall, then. I was under the impression that you only indexed free-access sites.

We do try to avoid linking to recipes behind paywalls. The exceptions will be:

  1. Where we produce complete author indexes (as outlined above). We will link to those author's recipes in order to keep the index complete.

  2. Where the site allows a certain amount of free access before the paywall goes up - this would apply to The Telegraph and Epicurious.

  3. We have a lot of recipes that were linked to when the site was free but now there is a paywall. This would be many sites - the most common sites on EYB will be NYT, Washington Post, and Epicurious.
