My apologies if this has already been suggested (another suggestion I have is adding a Search feature to the forum).

When I am looking for matches, I check ISBNs. However, I know from my work as a librarian that different ISBNs do not necessarily mean different content. I am really glad you have the linking ISBNs feature in place, but I wonder if you could enable us to suggest other ISBNs to link.

I gather that you are trying to balance between bibliographic distinctions and similarity of content. For me, as a cook and librarian, the worth of EYB is in the indexing of the content, not as a narrowly focussed LibraryThing. So when I come across a situation where my edition or pritning isn't in your database, I have been choosing the closest match. However, if one version of the title has been indexed, I'll add that one to my booksehlp, even if it doesn't match so well. It's much more important to me to have the indexing than the bibliographic detail exact.

The example in front of me is Edna Lewis' The Taste of Country Cooking, which has a few linked ISBNs already, but not the ISBN on the item I have, which is for a Knopf hardback published in 2000.

Thanks for considering this!

Once we have the new version of the site completed (not long away now) we have a long to-do list of enhancements and tidying up the linked books is on there.  We want to create one master, either the edition that is indexed (which is dictated by what edition our indexer can get from their library) or the edition that most members own.  Then all the other editions will be linked to it and all data shared across the group - recipes, ratings, comments, bookshelves.  We will have to consider how much sharing of data we do when different editions of the same book have been indexed e.g. revised editions or UK/US editions.

If you own a different ISBN to the ones in the Library, we can add it later.  Import the ISBN using the Import Books feature and it will get added to our list of books that members have requested.  We will be setting up new affiliations with other booksellers that have more rare and out-of-print books so once that data is added, the books will automatically be added to the requester's Bookshelf.

If you ever notice an indexed book that you think should be linked but isn't, please let us know.  It was an automated process during our big import of 70,000 books recently and where there were differences in the title, they didn't link.  We are tidying that up now manually but members alerting us if they spot any misses would really help.
