Search filter anomaly? Sherry vinegar   Go to last post Go to last unread

I don't very often use the drop-down search filters on the right-hand side of Recipes pages, instead usually just type in what I'm looking for in the search text box at the top.  But recently, in an effort to use up some pantry items, I've been searching on them to find recipes that call for significant quantities.

One of these was sherry vinegar, but it wasn't among the named types under Vinegar, so I figured those recipes must be included in "Other".  But selecting "Other" produced zero results.  So I cleared that and just typed "sherry vinegar" in the search text box (with quotes, to avoid getting plain sherry and plain vinegar): more than 500 results.  Going back to the filters to try again, I selected "General"; it covered 1100+ recipes on my bookshelf, so I figured that was where the sherry vinegar recipes would be.  But when I refined the results by again typing "sherry vinegar" in the text box, there were only three.

What gives?

Is it possible that there is a filter for sherry vinegar but it mistakenly didn't get placed in the list of types under Vinegar?  Or is there something else I should be doing to get the same results as I do when I do a search by text?

Sherry vinegar is categorized in Wine vinegars, which is the bottom listing under Vinegars in Pantry ingredients.

The 3 recipes you saw when you searched by general vinegars with "sherry vinegar" in the word search would have appeared because they also contained a general vinegar such as white vinegar or malt vinegar.

If you ever are not sure what category an ingredient fits in, enter the term in speech marks in the word search, then look at the numbers on the filters, which represents the number of recipe categories including that term.
