I don't know if it is just me, but it seems as though half the new cookbooks on the shelves at my favourite bookshop are either paleo or vegan! And the same for blogs! The funny thing is, they do have something in common, have you noticed? It's 'cauliflower rice'!

Is there no longer a happy middle ground?

It always seems there is a trend of the moment. For a time you couldn't escape cupcake books. I expect that this, too, will pass. My bookshelf has several vegetarian volumes but nothing paleo or vegan will likely end up there.

At the same time as 'cauliflower rice' began appearing everywhere, prices for cauliflower here skyrocketed to meat levels. That probably has more to do with growing conditions / economics at the farm level than with cooking trends, but if I'm paying $8/lb for a vegetable I'm certainly not going to rice it...

If you browse the book section of your local thrift store, I think you will see what I have been noticing the past couple of years.  They are packed with books on Paleo, Vegan and Gluten-free.  To me this is a real indicator that this trends are on their way out.  There are always those folks who are on the lookout for the next trend to embrace and just as quickly they leave the last trendy thing in the dust.  I've known a few of these people and have learned to just smile and nod when they start going on and on about how everyone else must do whatever it is they are into at the moment.
