Sort by "category" function?   Go to last post Go to last unread

Hi all, I am a lover of EYB for a few years now, and must log in and use the site at least twice a day. However, I am wondering why there is not the ability to sort recipes by their category? Are there plans to add this feature? I would use this a lot - there are only three in my family - and usually have to remake a cooked item into a new dish, and being able to sort recipe hits by the category "leftovers" would be very helpful. Thanks, and keep up the great work! ~Dani B

Hi Dani B, I find the filters work quite well - I wouldn't mind being able to browse others' bookmarks occasionally because they've probably added things that aren't part of the book's description (eg. gluten free won't always be a category for a recipe if it's not particularly identified as such which helps to maintain the integrity of the information on this site). if you want to filter by leftovers you get quite a lot of results just putting in 'leftover' in the search field. It brings back both recipes with leftover in the title, and that use 'leftover xx' as an ingredient. I've also got things that I make regularly with leftovers that I've created my own bookmark group for leftovers. Cooked and Deli chicken (and beef...) is also an ingredient filter that can be accessed in the right hand panel. Hope that helps. j_h

You can add your own Bookmarks that will then allow you to filter results. So if you create a Bookmark 'Leftovers' then you can add it to recipes as you come across them and use the filter when looking for a recipe.

I'm not sure what the point of a "Sort by category" function would be rather than a "Filter by category". Can you clarify how you would use this?

Hi Jane

I guess I would use it like you would when you filter. I do use the filter option a great deal, but I noticed that the Category which is displayed with each recipe contains a lot more detail that is avaiable - than say "recipe type" that may only have 5 or 6 types of recipe - but will list recipes as "low fat" or "entertaining" or "slow cooker".

I am just interested in the option, and wondered if it had been considered. If not, I am interested to know why there is a recipe CATEGORY and the ability to add/select it when adding a recipe, but you cannot utilize it when searching or filtering - so why is it there? Other than the obvious funtion of CATEGORY, to bunch things together, I was confused that I could not access it to sort/filter my recipes.

Thanks!

~Dani B
