Maybe there is a way, but I don't see it.  It would be super helpful to be able to sort my own bookshelf by the date I added the book.

thanks!

JUlia28 - the date you add books to your Bookshelf is not stored so it is not an available sort.

Agreed, it would be useful to sort bookshelf by date or most recently added.

IO have been fighting myself trying to decide how to sort my bookshelf.  I have about 500 = or - a few and I can find out a recipe in EYB but where on my shelves is it.

I'm starting to think my only real answer is by alphabetical author's name. Now what do I do with the huge number of books with multible authors?

Does each book have its own dewey number, somehow I doubt it. Other solutions welcome.

The short answer re: individual dewey numbers is......no.  Cookbooks fall into dewey call number 641.5.  Every number that occurs after the .5 designates a more specific category of cookbook (along with MANY sub-categories).  Books with the same number are then shelved by the primary (1st listed) author's surname.  For example there will be many designated as "general" titles and will have the same number.  The numbers themselves can be quite long (eg Cooking--Tuscany,Italy is 641.59455).  This means that titles by the same author OR in an intentional series (ie a boxed set)  actually get different numbers and are not shelved together.

The other major classification system (Library of Congress - used for very large collections) classifies cookbooks as TX 642-840) (Technology - Home Economics - Cooking categories).  BUT "dietary cookbooks" (which includes my Skinnytaste titles) fall under RM214 - 258 (Medicine - therapeutics  etc).

WOW - that should be enough of that for Monday morning:)

If I were you I would shelve by author's surname using the primary (1st listed) author.  Interesting that I did a couple of searches re: my shelf and "Cooking at Home with Bridget and Julia" has the author's listed as:  Bridget Lancaster, Julia Collin Davison and the Editors of America's Test Kitchen.  I seached by Lancaster (1st author listed) and got nothing - the only search that works in EYB is America's Test Kitchen.  But searching Canal House OR Hirsheimer  OR Hamilton will get me Canal House: Cook Something.

Lastly, if you look on the page that gives all of the publishing info you MIGHT find the Library of Congress &/or Dewy numbers are provided OR you might find "available on request" or "through the Library of Congress" itself.

If you are looking to physically find a book, this is what I do (1000+ books).

Whenever I buy a physical book or receive it in the mail, it gets entered into my library by the ISBN number (Library of Congress, listed on the back of every book).  This is done by plugging in the ISBN's in "Import Books" under My Bookshelf in EYB.  Each book so entered then gets a little Avery colored dot stick-um on the front page (yes, this book has been entered).   Then it usually gets stacked on this 2 ft. pile to my right on the desk.  When time allows, I go through the stack and decide if this is a baking book, celebrity, ethnic, ATK, etc. (often more than one description) volume.  All that book is representing is entered under my Bookmark categories.  The dot stick-um is also pencilled (not inked) in with shelf number. Each book is then physically placed on the appropriate shelf.

What shelves, you might ask?  I recently gathered all the books from their numbered shelves in the family room, kitchen, under the bed, etc. and moved them into my new library.  A large vacant bedroom was transformed with wall-to-wall black Billy shelves from Ikea.  Each small shelf now has a small numbered stick-um so the shelf coordinates with my index.  The dot inside the book is also marked to indicate which shelf it belongs to.

Now, to find all these books, I have added Bookmarks in my own account for which shelf holds which kind of book.  IOW, for each book, I know the type (ethnic), the physical location (Shelf 31), the title (More Mexican...), and the author (Rick Bayless).  All these descriptions are made for each book, so I can look up by any interest.

I do this with Kindle book as well, but that needs a print-out of the Cookbooks section of My Kindle at Amazon and I check off each one that is entered.  The un-located or not-even-entered books stand out.  I also have the small canvas collapsible boxes from Ikea that hold the special magazines...ATK specials, seasonal, my huge pile of NY Times cooking print-outs.

Yes, I am OCD.  I think I spend more time organizing than I do cooking.  But I am a fairly Happy Camper alone here during the pandemic, arranging books.

averythingcooks, thanks for the info about the authors of Cooking at Home with Bridget and Julia, whose full names don't appear on the cover so were likely missed when the book was added to the EYB Library. I've added both names so that Bridget Lancaster now appears as the first author, Julia Collin Davison as the second, and Editors at America's Test Kitchen as the third.

Deborah - thank you!  My intent wasn't to complain - i was just doing some "multiple author" searches to see what happened with my book shelf......but I do appreciate the rapid fix!

Like rivergait, I have location bookmarks for my books. In fact, I spent part of the weekend updating them, but sadly had to add a new designation- MIA for the books I couldn't find after a flood that necessitated placing most of our books in boxes. I have very specific kitchen bookmarks- kitchen island, kitchen bookshelf, kitchen cupboard (a closed shelf in the island); then library, sunroom and Allison's bookshelf for my elder daughter's former bedroom turned office. So far, there are 20 in the MIA category, a couple of which I think I added even tho I don't own them in order to have the recipes from an unindexed book (Jacques Pepin's very cute self illustrated Poulets et Legumes). Next weekend I will search for the missing books...
