Some magazine recipes can't be added to my bookshelf   Go to last post Go to last unread

Hi -

I'm a new user, so this might be answered easily!

I usually rip recipes out of magazines, and I was trying the index the recipes I saved from the lastest Food Network magazine.   However, some of the recipes seem to be there but don't have the "+Bookshelf" option.  Is there a reason that I can only add some of the recipes?  The link to the magazine index is below.

Thanks!

Hi Cristin B : welcome to EYB.

The + bookshelf symbol will only occur if the magazine has loaded the recipe online at the time it was indexed. Some magzaines put all recipes on line, others take an eternity, and still others keep us running to the newsstands...! So you can only +bookshelf the ones EYB has recorded as having an online recipe ;-)

As Deb says you can only add an individual recipe to your Bookshelf if it has an online link.  However, if you own the magazine, why not add the complete magazine to your Bookshelf - if you have a subscription, you can tick the EYB 'subscribe' and new issues will automatically be added to your Bookshelf each month.  I realise you have previously clipped recipes from magazines that you like the look off - probably because it's an easier way to file and be able to find recipes in the future.  But perhaps now that you're an EYB member it might be worth considering leaving the magazines intact.  You now have a searchable index of the entire magazine, and you may find that in future a recipe that didn't initially appeal may later on, as tastes change.  When you receive a new issue - instead of clipping - use Bookmarks and personal notes to mark recipes you want to try.

There is, of course, a question of space!

Also, if you come across a recipe from an indexed magazine that is available on the magazine website - let us know and we'll add it.  Our indexers periodically go back and check, but some do get missed.

On a similar vein, how can we add Mark Bittman's EAT column from the Sunday New York Times Magazine section?  Is it a magazine?  This week's piece on Marcella Hazan is a lovely tribute, with some classic recipes.  Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

Mark Bittman's columns are actually currently being indexed. When they do go live on EYB, they will be listed under the blogs tab as they are getting indexed from the NYTimes website. We will be making announcements (Facebook/Twitter/blog) when they are live, but will try to post the info here as well when the time comes.

Would also love to see Mark Bittman's columns from NYTimes, as well as Melissa Clark's and David Tanis'!

Wanted to post an update here for those interested in Mark Bittman's columns -- EAT, The Minimalist, and Flexitarian are all now indexed. Click the links to add to your bookshelf, or you can browse and add individual recipes.
