I'm late to this thread, but to my surprise, no-one has mentioned Michael Smith's Fine English Cookery; refined and slightly out of the ordinary recipes. And if you want real old-fashioned country cooking, Dorothy Hartley's Food in England is a must-have. Lots of food history, fantastic medieval recipes, and she even tells you how to build a privy in the garden. Other than that, Jane Grigson is a true authority on British cooking. It's a shame these classics are so neglected nowadays.

I really love the River Cottage cookbooks.

I can really recommend Gary Rhodes' New British Classics. Many of the recipes in here are very careful and precise, slightly updated versions of food our mums used to make. In general I am not a fan of his books, but make an exception for this one. His roast chicken, toad in the hole, scotch eggs and malt loaf all give excellent results. Not a lot of countryside but plenty of traditional and authentic British grub!

Well after a LOT of considerations, for the moment, I have selected, the British Larder, Week in week out from Simon Hopkinson and Great British Food Revival which is from a variety of chefs so gives a little of everything :)

I also have Scottish Baking from Sue Lawrence and Kettle broth to gooseberry fool in the waiting list.

Am going to Chile and Easter Island for three weeks in a few days so will make the final decision when I return :)

And finally... I bought all four : Great British Food Revival, The British Larder, On Scotland from Sue Lawrence, and Week in Week out from Simin Hutchinson.

I had intended to try one on the British Larder this week-end, got the ingredients but finally realised I was too ambitious and had other ingredients to use up first. But have saved up the ingredients and will try shortly :)

Thanks a lot for all your advice! I will let you know how it goes :)

Though of course all of the four books are NOT indexed :( :( :( (I know I can do it, but I have another one to finish first which fortunately isn't too far along)

Agaillard - Week In Week Out is indexed and The British Larder is being indexed by a member. So it's just the other two you may need to index yourself.

Thanks Jane! Somehow I had missed it - so at least 1 out of 4...

The British Larder I had seen, hopefully whoever is indexing it, is faster than I am 8-/

I was interrupted by the Paris attacks in November, and I NEED to pick it up again. Argh.
