Replacement for blue cheese?   Go to last post Go to last unread

Hello

I used to love blue cheese, until, when I was about 4 or 5, my father had me believe it was a home for worms who dig their little galeries (the little holes), and that was why it was blue, because it was rotten. Since that day, impossible for me to eat any cheese remotely blue, even Morbier (I take out the part in the middle).

Anyway, I have usually used cream cheese or fresh goat cheese as a replacement, was wondering if anyone had other ideas? And in particular any stronger idea - in terms of taste?

Since blue cheese has a strong flavor I think your substitute needs to be stronger than a cream cheese or fresh goat's cheese (unless yours has good flavor). If the blue cheese is being crumbled then I would say feta is a good sub. If a creamier blue cheese is called for then what about using an ashed chèvre instead?

Great idea, I haven't thought of feta! Yes maybe ashed chevre too..especially when the recipe matches it with pears, it would go very well with it.

My boyfriend came up with another interesting idea : https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boulette_d%27Avesnes (a soft version of Maroilles cheese https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maroilles_cheese which is very strong in flavour). Though that might prove difficult to find outside of France :)
