When will more books be indexed?   Go to last post Go to last unread

The addition of requested new books will be all at once when we add more affiliate booksellers (in the next month) and books you have requested will automatically go onto your Bookshelf.  We will announce when it happens so you will know that the books have been added.  We aren't set up to tell members individually as their requested books are added but it's something we are considering for the future.

Wishlists and improvements to the Forum are on our (very long) to do list.

Thanks for the feedback - always appreciated.

Welcome Lucy as a new EYB member.  We do plan to allow members to index their own cookbooks and to upload covers.  That is in development now.  We have created an indexing interface on the website for our paid indexers which is workng well but we will have to add lots of enhancements before we open it up to members.  So I can't give you a date for it happening but it is a priority for us.

Hey Jane,

I'm a paid member. Where can I find the index interface?

Thanks,

Lucy Zoe

Lucy - the index interface is not developed yet.  It's a quite a big deal to build it so it's not going to be up for a few months.  We will announce it on the site as soon as it is available.

One feature of the indexing interface will need to be several lines (at least three or four) for entering the names of recipes in various languages. Many cookbooks show the names of recipes in English, the national language, and, frequently, in local/regional languages or dialects, as well. People may search for the recipe by any of those names. I've got one Indian cookbook that shows the recipe names in Hindi and English, but its index only shows the names in Hindi! Kind of useless for us non-Hindi speakers! EYB can come to the rescue!

Also, it should be possible to enter page numbers for recipes. (I know, page numbers may vary between versions of a book, but they're still useful.) I've got at least one book that I'd like to index -- a 1000 recipe compendium of desserts and delicacies from Spanish convents -- that has no index at all! What could the publisher have been thinking? Page numbers will be essential to be able to find the recipes in the future!

The indexers seem to be going gangbusters on the Time-Life series! I'm sure everyone who owns it will be thrilled!

Fiona and Jane, can you give us an update on how things are going on member indexing? And on more books being added to the library? With member indexing I should have a hobby to last me for years! :-) Thanks!

Rob - sorry I missed this post. The indexing interface for members is almost completed and we will start with a trial with a few keen members to check that we have covered all bases before we do a member-wide launch. Our data manager, Deborah, will be in touch in the next few days.

On a different issue that came up in this thread, we have today added a Sort by Date Added to Library which allows you to see which of the books you have requested have now been added to your Bookshelf. You can also sort the EYB Library to see what new books have been added to the Library.

Jane--both of those are good news. I am most excited about the member indexing and looking forward to getting some of my favorites indexed.

Thanks to you and the rest of the EYB team for your resposiveness to members!

And on a related note, I see that indexed books just hit 1800 (which is not significant for any reason other than every round number marks a milestone)

Jane - -Thanks for all the hard work you put into EYB, it seems there are new improvements on the way all the time.

I too am very excited by the news about member indexing comming soon. I can't wait too index those of my favorite books that are not likely to be indexed by EYB.

On top of that you are launching in UK, and more of my books are likely to be indexed soon, I can't stop smiling : D

It'll be great if member indexing can start soon. Will there be some kind of sign-up list for member-indexers so everyone knows what books are being indexed (and who's doing it)? There needs to be some way to avoid having numerous people all indexing the same book at the same time! It's a lot of work to do only to find out that someone else has been doing it, too! Thanks!

Initially while we are testing out the member indexing, our data manager, Deborah will assign the books they request to index to the volunteers.  So there is no chance of two people indexing the same book.  Once the book is assigned to an indexer it cannot be done by anyone else.  Also, the status will change to Index Soon (as it does for the books assigned to the professional indexers).

When we launch the full system, we will have a chart that will show all the books in the Library with its position in the queue, from a combination of # Bookshelves and # Index Requests.  So you can decide which of your books are not likely to be indexed by EYB any time soon.  Once you request a book for indexing it is then assigned to you, and again, no-one else can index it.  Books will be linked so no-one can assign a linked book if the master is being indexed.

Thanks Tommelise and schambers for your kind words. We plan to have some other useful developments in the next couple of months.

Thanks! It's good to know there won't be any accidental duplication of effort!
