Publishers Text

Basic introductory material included in Simply Good Cooking Pennsylvania Dutch Style is intended to provide a brief get-acquainted profile of America's plain people --the Amish, the Brethren, the Dunkards and the Mennonites. Cooking is an integral part of the Pennsylvania Dutch culture. As the title suggests, it is simply good; there are few frills or elaborate flourishes. The traditional Pennsylvania Dutch approach to cooking is content with a few basic materials, but versatility and ingenuity come with the use of materials. Many of the recipes in this collection date back for three generations or more. The list of contributors of recipes, ideas and stories is extensive. Everywhere the spirit of sharing and the willingness to help was felt.
