Publishers Text

First self-published 1976, Wine Label Language found an enthusiastic market of wine drinkers around the world. Well reviewed, it was rated 'an outstanding international book' by Dan Murphy, a major wine retailer in Australia. This easy-reference book is for wine enthusiasts, building knowledge and interest in what they are drinking and the factors, legal and natural, which help each wine region or appellation, produce unique wine. A big part of the book is devoted to Europe, especially France and Italy as they are a huge presence in the international market and are more demanding of explanation. These are listed in easy-find alphabetical form under country chapters. Find Margaux or Champagne in the French chapter; find Barolo or Chianti in Italy. Spain, Portugal and Germany are also included in the European section. Wine Label Language provides finger-tip knowledge on each of the well-known wine regions of Europe providing easy information on the standards and requirements required to conform with the appellation names (e.g Burgundy) which have made each an identity. This includes the grape varieties allowed in each, the formal requirements in minimum alcohol, maximum yield; wine drinkers are thus informed to make comparisons between appellations and areas and have quick, easy access to the background of each region. The expansion of 'new world' wine zones into international focus makes chapters on 'new world' regions, like New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, U.S.A., Canada, Argentina and Chile a logical extension for wine drinkers and what they can expect from names, grapes and titles on labels.
