Publishers Text

Connoisseurs of whisky regard the process of distilling and its eventual product as an art. This book offers a glimpse into another art form celebrating whisky - posters and showcards from the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, produced to advertise the range of whiskies available during that period. The book contains 70 colour posters from the archives held in the Public Record Office. Many are reproduced in full-page size, and each has an extended caption providing information about the whisky, its distiller or blender, its links with the present day and the style and content of the poster design. The introduction explains the social and historical background to the industry at the end of the 19th century, and outlines the public debate which raged at the time about the nature of true whisky.
