Fig, orange & star anise tea loaf from Crumb: The Baking Book (page 42) by Ruby Tandoh

Where’s the full recipe - why can I only see the ingredients?

Always check the publication for a full list of ingredients. An Eat Your Books index lists the main ingredients and does not include 'store-cupboard ingredients' (salt, pepper, oil, flour, etc.) - unless called for in significant quantity.

The no fat threw me. It took much much much longer to bake than the recipe estimated, I am guessing because I used a glass loaf pan rather than metal. But after all that it was very good toasted with butter. More a breakfast or snack thing than a dessert thing. Phenomenal fragrance.

I happened to have all the ingredients on hand, but just half the amount of figs, so I made a half recipe in an 8.5"x4.5" pan, a squat loaf which baked in 35 minutes. Not sure if there is an error in my edition, but the recipe doesn't call for any fat. I was tempted to add some oil, but didn't, since this turned out well for others. I thought it was okay, but rather dry - best toasted with butter. The flavor combination was nice.

My husband and I liked this. The kids did not, which left more for us!
