    This takes much less time than what the recipe says. The kidney beans were soft after 15 minutes boil + 60-75 minutes simmer. I salted the bean cooking water with about 1/2 tbsp sea salt and added a bay leaf. I'm thinking that this recipe is meant for pot barley, rather than pearl barley. Using pearl barley I only simmered for 30 minutes and added the potatoes after 10 minutes. It turned out great, a very hearty soup.
