My great aunt's chana masala from Family: New Vegetarian Comfort Food to Nourish Every Day (page 221) by Hetty Lui McKinnon

Where’s the full recipe - why can I only see the ingredients?

Always check the publication for a full list of ingredients. An Eat Your Books index lists the main ingredients and does not include 'store-cupboard ingredients' (salt, pepper, oil, flour, etc.) - unless called for in significant quantity.

Can substitute oil for ghee, serrano chiles for Indian green chiles, tomato purée for tomato passata, ground cayenne pepper for Indian chile powder, and flatbread for cooked rice.

I have made several versions of chana masala and this is my favorite so far. It has more spices and a few more steps than other recipes but the end result is certainly worth it (this is not to imply the recipe is difficult; it isn't). The recipe suggests serving garnishing the chana masala with some diced red onion and cilantro and that was delicious!
