Always check the publication for a full list of ingredients. An Eat Your Books index lists the main ingredients and does not include 'store-cupboard ingredients' (salt, pepper, oil, flour, etc.) - unless called for in significant quantity.

    I tried the variation with two small-ish sweet potatoes in place of carrots, because I had sweet potatoes to use up. Otherwise as written. I feel like I should've known better -- a weak broth dominated by sweet potato. I'll use it as a base for some strong-flavored soups where the sweetness won't detract, but I won't make this again.
