The Art of Italian Cooking, by Maria Lo Pinto, has been "indexing now" since I first joined EYB about two years ago. It is not a huge book. Has the indexer given up? Forgotten? Left EYB? Died? How can the book be brought out of indexing limbo?

bittrette - whenever you feel a book has had Indexing Now status for too long, email us and we will contact the member indexing it and see if they plan to finish it. Though I checked this book and it seems to be stuck. It's likely it was once assigned to a member then got taken back and somehow the index status did not change. I will get our developer to unstick it and then you can request to index it yourself.

It is always worth members emailing us with this query. In this case it alerted us to a stuck book. Or it may prompt a member to restart indexing a book they had forgotten about.

Hi Jane. One problem is that having followwed that procedure, two books on my indexing now list, were sent to the developer to be unstuck on 6th June and still have not been removed. They were The French Kitchen and The Csiro Total Wellbeing Diet Fast and Fresh. How long does it usually take for the developer to have time for this?

I'm between computers right now so I can't index a book or install the bookmarklet. But when I get my new computer I'll be happy to start indexing :)

Cati - it is on his to-do list but he has had a couple of very large projects he has been doing for us.

The same is true with "Better Homes and Gardens Heritage Cook Book" which has been "indexing now" for over a year, as well as (I believe)

"Craig Claiborne's Favorites from the New York Times."  Both have been indexing now for quite some time.  Are these going to be finished?

Is there a way to tell when a book indexing was started?

DonnaMarieNJ -- Thanks for asking about those two titles. Both have now been released from "Indexing Now" status. The BH&G Heritage Cookbook had only a dozen or so recipes indexed (of 700 total!), and the Craig Claiborne hadn't been started.

There is one book on my bookshelf that has been showing as indexing now for a very long time:

New Irish Cookery by Paul and Jeanne Rankin

Can you check and see whether that is one that is stuck or has been forgotten please?

Also, on this topic I was wondering how long I should leave between submitting a book that I have indexed and querying whether it is stuck somewhere in the system? I finished a book in early November which I haven't received any feedback on yet - I guessed that this was because so many new cookbooks are released and need to be indexed at this time of year, but reading this thread makes me wonder if it might be stuck somewhere!

Hi, FJT -- I looked into the status of New Irish Cookery, and indeed the member-indexer had stalled after indexing a dozen or so recipes. I've unassigned it so this book is now available to be requested by another member. (However, as sometimes happens, the edition that had been linked to the "master" for indexing is still showing as Indexing Now. I'll ask our tech staff to fix it.)

Your submission from early November has just now come almost to the top of the Member Indexing Review queue, which we tackle in chronological order. Our pro indexing of new books is not related to the member indexing backlog; it's purely a question of member indexing being vastly more popular than we could have imagined! You should be receiving some feedback soon from Sydney, our Member Indexing reviewer.

Feel free to email me directly -- [email protected] -- if you'd like to check on any other Indexing Now titles.

Thanks Deborah for your quick response (why are you working on a Sunday?!!).  I'll wait until Sydney has had a chance to review the book I indexed in November and the one I submitted this week and then I'll submit a request to index New irish Cookery too.  I want to make sure that I've taken on board anything that Sydney has to say about the ones I've just indexed before I tackle another one and I'm glad to hear that there is a queue of member-indexed books to review - it means more of us are getting involved!
