I love beans and rice and would like to expand my repertoire beyond my 3 standbys--cuban style black beans and rice, mujadara, and  frijoles and rice (Mexican takeout).  What would you recommend?

A good way to find new recipes that other EYB members have enjoyed is to search the quarter of a million online recipes we have on the site by the ingrediet and then sort by Buzz (the recipes with the most Notes and Ratings).

There are 739 recipes that contain beans and rice - they are not all "Beans and Rice" but you may find something of interest there.

As long as beans and rice do not need to be cooked together, I can think of two styles I cook and like.  Any style of bean curry over rice and vegetarian (with lots of beans) chili over rice.  I normally prefer eating chili over rice with a sunny side up rather than by itself.

Just for fun (I too only think of those dishes) I searched my bookshelf and was surprised to see on the first page: Turkish, Persian, Indian, Chinese, Syrian, Sephardic and Israeli recipes for rice with beans! I plan to expand my horizons.

We like a number of Iranian polow recipes & my 3yo devours Japanese sekihan by the bowlful. Have fun exploring!

Two standbys here:
Louisiana red beans & rice (& not only on a Monday)
Black-eyed peas & rice, usually with greens
Okay, make that three:
Indian dal (favorite is the late filmmaker Ismail Merchant's lemon lentils) & basmati rice
Now you've reminded me that I should make mujadara soon!

There is a Philippine dish called Mongo that has mung beans, rice, spinach, tomatoes, and olive oil that is delicious. I have a recipe in Madhur Jeffrey's World of the East Vegetarian (which I do recommend), but I'm sure you can find versions elsewhere.

Black eyed beans are very good, there is a recipe I like in The Pressure Cooker Cookbook by Catherine Phipps, which contains them together with onion garlic, cumin, turmeric, nigella, creamed coconut, fresh coriander and spinach.

Kitcheri is an indian dish of red lentils and rice (later adapted to Anglo Indian kedgeree which contains smoked fish and hardboiled egg).  Kitcheri is humble but tasty.

There is also the Caribbean version :

They have variations of this dish all around the Caribbeans (i.e. Jamaica, Guadeloupe, etc.)
