In search, how do I select for a particular cooking method (sous vide, slow cooker), or perhaps by pot (tagine, pressure cooker)?

I am afraid we don't have all cooking methods as a filtering option. Under Recipe types / Dish types you will see Grills & BBQ and Stir-fries. We have discussed adding those cooking methods but we always have the issue with the 1.8m+ recipes we have already added.

We have the same problem with page numbers. We initially didn't add page numbers because we only index one edition and link all other editions, so where the formatting of the book changes, then the page numbers would be wrong for the other editions. But we decided about five years ago that since the majority of cookbooks have only one edition we would start adding page numbers.

If members want to volunteer to add cooking methods and page numbers to books in their own collections (muchquicker and easier than doing a complete index) then maybe we could add the cooking methods filter.

If a member wanted to add the page numbers to the index they would contacxt our Data Manager Deborah ([email protected]) and she would assign the book to that member. It would then appear under My Bookshelf / Indexing. The member would go through adding all the page numbers.

Adding cooking methods would have to wait until our developer creates that in the database. But I was asking whether any members feel they would want to contribute to adding those tags for already indexed books on their Bookshelves. Many recipes would not have a cooking method but for a book that does e.g. a slow cooker or a sous vide cookbook, it would not take long to go through the book adding cooking method and page number to each recipe.

TdeV, in the meantime, you can find a good number of results in a Recipes search by entering the name of the appliance/cooking method into the search box, since many recipe titles will include the words "sous vide", slow cooker", "tagine", "pressure cooker", etc. Moreover, even if those words don't appear in the recipe title, the search will also find recipes with those words in the book title, which will appear at the end of the search results. Here are a few sample method/appliance searches in the EYB Library/Recipes:

• tandoori -- 1,428 results

You can then use the Filter By sidebar to narrow down the search results for any other categories you wish to include or exclude: Recipe Types, Ingredients, Occasions, Nutrition, or Ethnicity.

Is there a way to add a function to the search where it automatically searches for similar words? For example, if I enter slow cooker, it also automatically would search crock pot and crockpot. This would also be useful for vegetables with separate English and American names, such as aubergine & eggplant.

MarciK - we do (from the start of the site) link ingredient names so a search by one finds all incidences of the linked ingredients. Such as aubergine/eggplant, courgettes/zucchini, prawns/shrimp, etc. These are set up within our ingredients database.

However, we don't have a cooking methods database so it is not possible to have a slow cooker/crockpot/crock pot link. If and when we add cooking methods as a category tag, those would then be linked.

I agree that a filter for cooking methods (slow cooker, pressure cooker, tagine, sous vide, etc.) would be helpful -- even knowing that it is indexed incompletely before a specific date. This would be similar to the policy for indexing eggs, as the indexing rules for eggs changed in summer 2018.

I just did a search of my recipes for the above methods, and I was surprised at how many slow cooker recipes I have in books other than my 3 slow-cooker cookbooks. Also, the number of tagine recipes outside of my Moroccan cookbooks. These searches only show what is in the recipe title or the book title; I am probably missing several that a good indexer would catch from the note or instructions. I never think of searching ALL my cookbooks for methods that are not included in the filters.
