I was trying to write a note (review) of a recipe that I cooked recently, but it won't save if it's too long. My full review is 9 lines, 233, words, and 1310 characters. I was able to get a shortened version of it (7 lines, 155 words, 883 characters) to save, but I don't actually find anything in the site guidelines or forum saying that one must keep reviews to a certain size.

Against the reply window is this message:

Maximum number of characters in each post is: 32767

and in the notes box for a book the limit is displayed as 1,000 characters.

The character count for Notes on a book or recipe counts down from 1000, as PatheticBaker says, but it's a very subtle display: it's in grayed type, just below the bottom right corner of the box where you enter text for a Note. You can see it count down as you type, or if you paste text into it you'll see how many additional characters you have left.
