Storing Probe Thermometers   Go to last post Go to last unread

Anybody have a nifty way of keeping the thermometer in a drawer?  The unit itself, the long tangle-y wire, and the probe that's longer than anything else...all go into my silverware divider in my gadget drawer.  Right after I quickly slam the drawer shut on a neat thermo, it jumps and twists in the dark drawer so that the potato masher and egg slicer quickly become co-joined triplets for the next time the drawer is opened.

I roll Silpats into an old salt-container tube (both ends removed).  I use coffee filters to keep glass measuring cups from sticking together.  In exchange for these tips, can anyone help me with the thermometer problem?

Ooh, I like the Silpat storage idea.  I just use a couple of rubber bands,  But I'm afraid I can't give you a tip in exchange for your probe thermometer as I don't have one.

How about putting it in a length of stocking. I don't know if that would work but at least it wouldn'ttangle with other things

I keep my probe thermometer in a ziplock bag and then put it in a drawer. It would be easy enough to hang up the bag, if I had a spot for that. I am paranoid about crunching the probe part, which has a curve to it and does bundle tidily with the rest of the thermometer.

I had seen another suggestion for storing silicon mats upright in cardboard oatmeal containers, but I like the idea of the smaller diameter of a salt container. Besides, I will empty a salt container two or three decades faster than an oatmeal box.

Does any one else have the problems I have been having with probes going haywire? I think I have had three replacement probes now from CDN - all free, certainly, but why do they suddenly go mad and start sending completely stupid readings just when you need them?

After having two probes fritz out on me after only a few uses, I gave up on the category, and just rely on an instant-read.

Hi Ellabee,,

I think you are right - old technology is sometimes better; after having a couple of batches of jam overcook this year I went back to a normal jam themometer; for roasts an old digital one still works stuck into the joint.

Thx for the ideas.  Think I may use the ziploc bag and hang it somewhere instead of using my Gadget Drawer.  BTW, the Silpats...I lay them flat (3 of them), roll them up to insert into the salt container, and stick my handle-less maple rolling pin inside.  The rolling pin makes it easy to extract the combo from a dark cabinet [although I do need to remove all the mats and re-roll whichever I don't use].

Oh, one other thought.  I'll put the thermometer bag on the inside of the baking cabinet drawer (eye level) by using the clothespin already there.  I hot-glued a couple of wooden spring clothespins to the inside of the door, which now become handy-dandy recipe holders for light-weight pages or clippings, the door remaining open right next to the stove while I'm cooking/reading.

I installed those holders which attach to the cabinet face plate in front of the kitchen sink. Once installed the face plate is hinged to pull outward and there is a longish container inside.

My probe thermometer wires and instant read thermometers fit in there perfectly! They are protected yet quickly accessible.

This link shows quite a few of them:
