Just a bit of fun, but I'd love to see a big 'Cook This' button added that chooses a random recipe from my bookshelf.  It would be great if it would also allow me to use the filtering features as well. So for example, I want a Main Course recipe that includes chicken and apricots and it randomly selects just one. It would help me in my never-ending 'but I still don't know what to make for dinner' problem!

That is a feature we may well add in the future.  But in the meantime. why not use the different Sort options (the box to the right of the search text box)?  You can sort your results by recipe title, author, buzz (number of ratings and notes), date published, ratings, or date indexed.  If you try these different sorts then you will see different results appearing on the first page.

Bumping this idea, I'd love this too - also with an option to get an email with random recipe ideas from your cookbooks on a daily/weekly basis would be great too.

Two things: (1) I'd like some sort of additional filter type system: so once we've searched on an ingredient in our recipes, and the list of recipes meeting our search criteria arrives (which may be multiple pages if we haven't been overly selective), a visual scan through might identify those we want to try, and rather than having to make a separate note.... if each recipe had a  "check this item" box, to allow speedy recall with a "view selections" , which then delivered only those recipes from our search and scan which we'd checked, it would greatly help narrow the returned recipes to a more manageable list for final selection! So for example.. tonight I wanted a main course that used mint (abundance growing needing pruning!). I searched my recipes with "main course" and "mint" as filters.. and got something like 950 recipes I started scanning thru and liked the sound of a few, but by screen 3 had forgotten those which I liked.. if I'd had a "select this item" checkbox by each recipe I'd liked, with a view selections option that would have been useful. I don't want to bookmark or tag these for future use, I just want a quick recall that I can review and discard!

Instead  I narrowed the range by adding haloumi as my search criteria, and that reduced to around 11.. so tonight's (2) random meal will be King prawns, haloumi and pineapple skewers with a chilli lime salsa... and amazingly I have all ingredients on hand! And I've never had it before and would never have thought of it.. so thanks EYB!

And another thing : spell check for forum posts ?

Has there been any more thought about a true random recipe generator? I have thousands or recipes and no idea what to plan for meals anymore. We're in a rut.

That would be such a great idea. I love it! Let's look into this EYB!

Until then, I sorted my recipes alphabetically for week #1 and chose the first 5 recipes that were suitable for dinners. 1 from a Martha Stewart Magazine, 1 from Every Night Italian by Giullano Hazan, 1 from How to Cook Everything by Mark Bittman, 1 from Cooks Illustrated June 1998 and the final one from The Barbecue Bible by Steven Raichelen :-) If I've ever used ANY of those 5 books it was probably for only 1 recipe. That was rather fun!

What a fun idea! Especially if you could filter by course and/or occasion.
