I wanted to remind you all that the 20th of April is national Lima Bean Respect Day.  I'll be visiting my daughter on the 20th, and I have it in mind to make a Brunswick stew, a concoction of mixed meats, frozen lima beans, canned tomatoes, potatoes, celery, carrots, and frozen corn.  Squirrel would be great to have among the meats, but chicken and rabbit will do along with a ham bone or a base of bacon.  If you haven't ever made it before, the version in Joseph Dabney's Smokehouse Ham, Spoon Bread, & Scuppernong Wine is a good jumping-off point, but really, there are 60 recipes for Brunswick stew in the Library, look them over for inspiration.

I'm hoping that on the 20th my husband will make his world-famous cornbread (straight out of the 1947 Joy of Cooking) to go with.

Thinking about Lima Bean Respect Day made me wonder whether other people celebrate the various food days, weeks, and months, and wondering that led me to the amazing and wonderful 365 blog.  Do you have celebration-of-a-food days in your calendars?

I haven't really observed things like Lima Bean Day. It seems like there are enough religious and secular holidays in the calendar to inspire out-of-the-ordinary cooking. Brunswick Stew is old-fashioned, good and filling. There are umpteen recipes for it! When I was living in Brazil I made it a couple of times, using chicken, and it was a big hit -- it's similar enough to other things Brazilians like and friends said I ought to make it and sell it! My version included sliced okra, which is a common vegetable in Brazil. Whichever version you make, the cornbread is certainly a good (and American) accompaniment! Your daughter is in for a treat!

THis is funny. Today is my husband's birthday. We were having some guests for dinner, and I made some chocolate mousse for dessert. Of course, the recipe made one extra serving. So about 2pm, I asked him if he would like the extra. Sure, he said. Started eating it, and whatever I did, resulted in a very grainy mousse. Oops. Plan B for dessert tonight. Ok, then I read your post, and start to look at what various "food days" are.... Turns out today is National Chocolate Mousse Day! We laughed and laughed. Guess it may not be in the cards for us to "observe" the calendar food days, first one was a bomb by default!
