Easily transportable Valentine's dessert   Go to last post Go to last unread

Hey there... My boyfriend and I are having a delayed Valentine's as I was sick on the actual one ... It's a special Valentine's because I am leaving the country permanently to go back home after that to be with my family (we were only 6 months old and he doesn't speak French and have a not easily translatable to another country job, so we have chosen to separate/say goodbye). Anyway I want it to be special, but the problem is he lives about one hour from me by public transport... So was looking for a special dessert to bring that would be easily carriable.

Any ideas? This is in London (re-availability of ingredients)

Thanks!

I'm not sure if this is too late, but you can take homemade chocolate truffles easily in small lunch cooler with a cold pack.

Thanks MarciK for the suggestion! No not too late, date is Saturday night and I will be baking Saturday. Actually I had thought of that but this is more a nibble than a real dessert.

For the moment, I am thinking cake, leave it in the mold and unmold at his place, possibly do frosting at his place (can't do the actual cake there, his baking equipment is ... substandard :)

As for cakes, I was thinking this [Chocolate and pistachio surprise cake] is quite original and I could make it bundt shaped with a simple melted chocolate pour on top?

I like this [Happy wife happy life chocolate cake], but think too complicated to carry and frosting too complicated as well.

Knowing that he likes when I bake things with "surprises" inside (like I baked the Mini banana cupcakes with a Nutella swirl but I didn't have enough Nutella, so some had nutella, some not, and he kept eating more just to find out which one it was :) - I was thinking maybe do a similar recipe with different flavours of jams inside, instead of nutella, but 1/ I don't really want to do the exact same recipe and 2/ no way I will have ripe enough bananas for Saturday.

Things like muffins will work I think if they have no frosting, or a very simple frosting that I could quickly do there (or just like pouring maple syrup on top)

No then :( I was hoping some of you had clever transporting tricks or specific recipes you used maybe bringing dessert over to dinner hosts, or that someone did bringing dessert when you were hosting?

For the moment I am thinking this with different flavours of jams inside for the surprise effect: https://www.eatyourbooks...wberry-jam-on-the-inside or the pistacchio link I sent before.

That chocolate and pistachio cake looks great - I've added it to my 'I Want to Cook This' bookmark. Living out in the burbs with no public transport I am always transporting desserts by car. I have found very useful a cake carrier with a handle when going to picnics. It's a round rigid box with a lock-on lid and handle - I'm sure Lakeland Plastics would have something like that. But if you were looking for something small that could be carried in a shoulder bag, what about indvidual molten chocolate cakes? If you bake them in advance (maybe underbake by a couple of mins as reheating) then transport in molds they should arrive unscathed. Then just nuke in microwave for 30 secs to make centers molten again. I always make Nigella's Molten chocolate babycakes from Domestic Goddess. I use silicone molds which means the cakes come out cleanly and there is no faffing about lining little tins with parchment. I know molten lava cakes are a bit passé but there is something sexy (or at least to me) about a gooey chocolate dessert.

Thanks Jane, that is SUCH a great idea, and I would have made a melting chocolate fondant initially, just all the recipes I know cannot necessarily be made in advance, it is so cool those can! I have to think of which molds I could use :) The cake transporter is a great idea also for the future (because for the moment as I am facing the stress of a cross-european move I am trying more to get rid of things than to acquire anything new)

Yes that is why I picked smaller cakes so I could transport them easily, in a small cardboard box or on their moulds on a shoulder bag, but I also could transport a bigger cake in its mold too and try to keep it on my knees on the train, etc (but that still wouldn't work with any decoration/frosting, it needs just be the cake)

just to report that finally, I did this : https://www.greatbritish...rt-shaped-biscuit-recipe

(Because on Tuesday, that silly sillly man who thankfully has no chance to be on EYB, looking at the desert menu, said he preferred fruit based dessert to chocolate...).

He was really happy with those, though, he finished the box almost right away.
