It seems a lot of shops are having sales as I found a great deal on a KitchenAid stand mixer.

One of the reasons I used to justify the purchase was the meat grinder attachment. I note there are 2.... a plastic one and a metal one. The metal one is much more expensive and not in any sale so was wondering if anyone can advise if its worth paying extra for it over the plastic one?

Thanks 😊

I've had the metal one since 1965, and it's just like new. But the real advantage of the metal is that when meat is ground, it should be kept as cold as possible, and you can prechill the metal one in your refrigerator or freezer and it will hold the chill. It makes a big difference in the quality of the grind, especially if you want to make sausage. The fat doesn't turn into mush.

We have the plastic version and have been grinding both beef and pork using the attachment for over 10 years.  For regular ground version, we use two openings.  Usually I cut up the meat, my husband feeds through the attachment, and  I hold a splatter guard while portioning and packing up.

i had the exact same dilemma! I purchased the metal meat grinder about 6-8 months ago. I've used it in multiple recipes for various types of meat and I love it. I've never used the plastic, but I'm so happy i went with the metal. It's easy to clean, sturdy and feels like it's going to last for a very long time.

I've used the plastic one for about 10 years without any trouble. I grind pork and venison with it. I have not had a metal one to compare. My plastic one is also the housing for the tomato strainer so it does double duty for me. It may be a consideration if you plan to buy other attachments.
