Searching how to make any ingredient as opposed to searching a listed ingredient   Go to last post Go to last unread

So this might be an odd question, but I'm guessing I'm not the only person who has contended with this...

Say I want to search something like how to make ricotta, but if I search "ricotta" it will come up with all of the recipes I have that use ricotta.

I really love the process of making ingredients that I use as opposed to buying everything just because I can. I'm trying to sort out if there's an overlooked feature that I've missed to search for "how to" within the cookbooks I already own. Should I just purchase a cheesemaking cookbook or is there another way to do this?

Thank you!

I have the same kind of question, for example: how to find recipes for bread dough from scratch without retrieving recipes which list bread or breadcrumbs or croutons as ingredients. It seems as if it should be possible already, but I haven't figured it out yet.

I now see it is possible.
You use the filters to select the recipe category: Baked goods, sub-category bread and rolls.

You also use the filters to select the ingredient category you want to leave out.
After you select it, you change the little plus sign on the green filter icon to a minus. The icon turns black to show you are excluding that ingredient: no sugar, no nuts, no breadcrumbs, no cheese, or whatever you choose.

I was confused because the recipe categories are called categories in one place and recipe types in another.

To find recipes for how to make an ingredient you would apply the "How to" filter - filters are on the right side and under the Menu on a phone. This is that filter applied to the search of Library Online Recipes. We added the How to filter a few years after we started the site so it likely there are still some recipes that should have that filter applied but don't. If you come across any please email the recipe page URL to us and we will add it. If anyone would like to learn more about using filters, this is the Help section.

jinni - recipe categories are all the tags applied to recipes. Recipe types is the sub-category of tags relating to the type of recipe it is. The other sub-categories are Course, Occasion, Nutrition (special diets) and Ethnicity.

Thank you for your help and fast response, Jane. I had no idea that existed and I'm excited to utilize this feature.
