Hello

Could you please add a 'category' to the indexing to indicate that part of a dishes preparation needs to be done ahead of time - soaking beans, marinating meat, baking something that must then cool, etc...

I know indexers are meant to add this to the notes but (a) they often don't and (b) I don't usually look anyway. And if this was a category, I imagine it would be easier to exclude it from searches.

thanks

Roger

The issue with ever adding a new category to the book or recipe filters is that we have 160,000+ books and 2.3 million recipes already in our database. It's not possible for us to go back through everything already indexed and add new categories.

I would be interested in other members views. Personally I think always having an EYB Comment, which displays under the ingredients list and on the Notes tab, is a better option as it should also state how much advance prep time is required, which a filter tag would not do. If any member ever feels an advanced prep comment should be included, please just send us the URL for that recipe and we can add it.

I agree with adding an indicator of the requirement of long pre or post preparation time. I also think that the issue of the indexing historical collection shouldn’t preclude doing it. Are we to stop developing the indexing because it wasn’t thought of before the original start of the collection?
As a member indexer, I’ve wished to be able to easily call attention to long preparation times. As a user I am desperate to be able to search by similar concepts such as preparation methods (braising, sheet pan roasting, etc…)

While I'm sympathetic to members who'd like to be able to exclude, or at least easily distinguish, recipes that need advance preparation in searches, my experience is that in the actual process of settling on specific recipes, it's pretty easy to avoid them.

Let me encourage EYBers to make liberal use of Bookmarks, which are flexible enough to make up for indexing categories that don't exist. Tagging 'Sheet pan', 'Braise', and other cooking methods of interest can quickly build up a body of knowledge; my growing 'Pressure cook' list has made a real difference to my cooking.

If you frequently do a search that turns up appealing recipes but then are put off by the need for advance prep, bookmark those. That way they're easily available to you in situations where you have the time and motivations to tackle one (like entertaining, or as a skill-building project). Or they'll be easier to spot in a list of recipes when you want to exclude them.

Even without EYB I have fallen into the trap of thinking I would bake something  — in my case croissants — having planned to use the recipe in Melanie Dupois's Patisserise: Mastering The Art of French Pastry because I knew "it was there" but failed to read the recipe carefully enough to realise that her method requires two days of effort. I had only planned to let the pastry chill overnight as in my previous attempts. As the croissants were required I had to forgo my Dupois version and revert to my tried Paul Hollywood version instead.

The fault for this timing error is full-square on me.I knew I would need the croissants on bake day several days previous. I had not read Dupois sufficiently well and simply assumed that she and Hollywood agree. Shame on me. There is no blame on EYB for this time failure as I had not searched my EYB bookshelf for the recipe . It was all on me.

Many of the long prep time recipes are dependent on the cook. What state have you stored your starter in? Are you taking a short cut of canned beans or pressure cooker? Are you going to be available, or do you need to slow a process down? How long to thaw? How much variation in marination time? In short, I adjust a recipe to fit into my life not vice versa. So, for me, the notes are preferrable. They usually indicate what the time is used for.
