I've just finished member indexing a few of my old favourites  and it struck me in so doing that things at home used to be so much simpler: fewer ingredients, easy methods etc. There was also a time when going out to a restaurant meant that, for certain, you'd be eating something that you wouldn't ever dream of having tried to cook at home. Now I prefer to cook and entertain at  home rather than in restaurants - perhaps one of the contributing factors to the often short shelf-life of local (non-celebrity) restaurants. And to think I once was in the restaurant game ... !

I prefer to eat at home when I'm in California.  When traveling I do look forward to trying some local places.  However, when I'm in Japan I love eating at restaurants and inns.

We very, very rarely eat out and even rarer feel that it was any better than we could have done ourselves at home. It's great to be able to eat well everyday :)

Back in the day (married days), our special occasions were celebrated by an expensive dinner at a restaurant. Eventually, though, we came to prefer an indulgent dinner at home with treats like cracked crab, oysters or exactly what we felt like.  It was always well prepared and accompanied by Champagne and other favourite wines.  No cares about drinking and driving, a lot less expensive and usually a great deal more fun than going out.
