I am new to EYB and it is a great idea.  Bur I am interested to know how many of my books have been indexed. If there are too few of them then a subscription is hardly worthwhile. Of the 6 I tried, 3 were indexed, 1 was listed but not indexed and 2 were not listed at all.

Do you have a complete list of all books listed. indexed, & in the process of being indexed?

How many books have been indexed?

How many are currently in the process of being indexed?

How many newly indexed do you add each month?

You can go to the EYB Library and then tick "Only Show" (on the upper right) "Indexed Books" or "Indexing Now Books". This will tell you that at the moment 5241 books have been indexed and 500 books are being indexed. If you want to find out about a particular book, you can enter the title or ISBN (or writer) in the search bar.

Hope this helps.

Thanks - I'll do that

Well I went ahead and took out a yealy subscription.

So far I have imported a total of 102 books of which only 23 are indexed - around 20% of my library which is disappointing.  Another 8 were not even listed in EYB.  Although I think they are now being included.  How long does that take?

Admittedly quite a lot of my books are not very special or quite old but even so I'm not sure how helpful EYB will be in finding recipes from my collection.  I'll obviously have to volunteer to do some indexing myself!!

I still have hopes that I will find the Online Recipes & Blogs helpful.

Hi BertieB and welcome to EYB.  The average % indexed of our members' Bookshelves in 65% so your average is a lot below that.  I took a look at your Bookshelf and there a few books on there that are on more than 50 Bookshelves so will be indexed in coming months.  But a lot of your books (73) are on less than 20 Bookshelves so it will be a long time before they are indexed, if at all.  There are almost 140,000 cookbooks in the EYB Library and it is not going to be possible for us to index them all (unless there is a huge increase in the number of paying members).  It costs 5 times an annual membrship just to index one book so you can see how the economics don't work for indexing every book.

EYB members are stepping up and indexing their books that are owned by fewer members - around 27% of books indexed this year have been done by members.  EYB still has costs involved in member indexing as every index is proofread and the indexer given feedback.  But that is one way that the less weell known books will get indexed.

In addition to adding the blogs to your Bookshelf, take a look at the Magazines.  Many magazines post the majority of their recipes to their websites and we link to those.  So a lot of magazine recipes are available, even if you don't subscribe to the magazine.

Hi

Thanks for your kind reply.  I guess my problems are:

  1. Most of my books are UK published and you probably don't have the same number of members there as in the US.

  2. Many of these books were old and relatively obscure.  I have another batch to enter which I hope will up my average :).

  1. I do take your point about the cost of indexing.  I guess a non human way of doing it can not be found.  I'm glad though that some of mine are likely to start being indexed fairly soon.  I will have a go at indexing a book or 2 myself if I can find the time.  I'd like to chose one that I use a lot but which may not be very common. Can I ask you for help in chosing one along those lines.

Three questions:

  1. When will the books not currently in EYB database that I tried to upload be added to it?

  2. I do have a few books without ISBN.  Is there no way they could be at least listed in the EYB Database.  I would like to have a comprehensive record od my cookbooks in one place.  I would be more than happy to provide details as I have to Library Things.

  3. No chance I suppose that one day I could enter my own personal recipes to EYB too I suppose?Keep up the good work.  It is a great concept.  I'm certainly going to give it a good try.

Hi BertieB - thanks for your understanding.  We would love to index more books but it is a very expensive process and we need a lot more paying members - so please all EYB fans, spread the word.  I'll try to answer your comments and questions:

Most of my books are UK published and you probably don't have the same number of members there as in the US.
EYB is an international site.  I am based in the USA and Fiona is in New Zealand, but we are originally British. We index English language books from the USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada.  The issue with your books isn't that they are from the UK but that they aren't owned by enough EYB members to push them up our indexing chart.  We have separate charts for each country so the fact that we have more members in the USA doesn't skew the chart.

Many of these books were old and relatively obscure.  I have another batch to enter which I hope will up my average :).
I hope your % does increase.  But I think the way to look at it is how many books you do have indexed, and the number of recipes now available in your searches.

I will have a go at indexing a book or 2 myself if I can find the time.  I'd like to chose one that I use a lot but which may not be very common. Can I ask you for help in chosing one along those lines.
Your best choice for your first book to index is a small book, easy to read.  Our Data Manager, Deborah will assist you when you start and give you feedback on how you are doing after you have indexed 10 or so recipes.  And after the book is finished, Sydney, who proofreads the member indexed books, will give you further feedback.

When will the books not currently in EYB database that I tried to upload be added to it?
9 of the books that you requested are now in the Library and on your Bookshelf. Actually one, 500 Juices & Smoothies, you will need to add to your Bookshelf.  You can see which books have been imported by sorting your Bookshelf, Books tab by "Date Added to Library".  The latest added books are at the top.

I do have a few books without ISBN.  Is there no way they could be at least listed in the EYB Database?
I'm afraid we don't have the resources to manually add the data for all the books that members have requested, that were not on Amazon.  As well as all the books members want to add that do not have ISBN numbers.  Though we will set up books if a member wants to index it.  And at some point we plan to add a feature that will allow members to add the data for their own books.

No chance I suppose that one day I could enter my own personal recipes to EYB too?
You can index your Personal Recipes.  Look under your My Bookshelf tab and you will see Personal Recipes.  There is a section in Help on how to do the indexing.
