Mistakes reading recipes   Go to last post Go to last unread

I consider myself a seasoned cook since I've been cooking since I was in my teens.  I've made some elaborate recipes even in my 20's requiring 3 days of prepareations.  Perhaps, I thoroughly read the recipes in the past but recently I've found myself making two simple mistakes because I did not read or understand the recipes completely.  One was our dinner last night.  I used http://www.eatyourbooks....icken-tinga-tacos.  I never use full amount of chiles or hot spices since my husband is very sensitive to heat.  I read 2 canned chipotles in adobo to mean 2 cans and so I only used about 1/4 to 1/3 of amount of 2 cans.  Whoops!  After reading reviews posted in F&W, I realized that it should have been just 2 chiles from cans.

I also made another mistake and right now I can't remember the exact recipe but I do remember it was from a magazine.  Again, it was the wording that caused me to make the mistake.

Don't feel all alone Rinshin!  I have also been cooking a lot since I was 10-12 years old and now find that I misread recipes every so often.  I think partly it is because some of the new cookbooks have small print or odd type fonts and partly because my eyesight even with glasses isn't what it used to be.   I also find it harder to multi-task like I used too, especially when I am tired.  Just this weekend I was making the Grapefuit Pie from Bold for the first time and was also trying to carry on a conversation with my visiting son.  Somehow while I was prepping all the ingredients I measured out 3/4 cup grapefruit juice instead of 2/3 cup.  I just baked it an extra 10 minutes and it came out okay but I kicked myself for not rereading as I was measuring.

I can't think of a specific recipe right now, but I've definitely done this sort of thing, too. I'll never forget the story of the time one of my husband's relatives was making a new recipe and mistook 1 clove of garlic to mean 1 head of garlic though -- I do believe the final product ended up in the trash!

I was once making maccaroons with my daughter.  The ingredients cost a fortune as there was so much to buy and I was in a rush so just added stuff to my online basket.  It wasnt until we came to do them that we realised that the recipe made 200!  Needless to say family and friends were very pleased with my mistake ...

About a year ago I made Julia Childs chocolate and almond cake (Reine de Saba).  It called for the eggs to be separated. After the batter was in the pan, I realized  the egg yolks were still sitting there.  I highlighted the sentence in the cookbook where it said to add the yolks so I wouldn't make the mistake again. Don't you know, I made the cake last week and forgot the yolks AGAIN!  Luckily I wasn't so far along in the recipe, so I was able to successfully add them without ruining the cake...  Sigh...
