How do I search my recipes for ingredients such as alfalfa but not alfalfa sprouts or alfalfa seeds?

You'd want to use the ingredient filters which are more precise than a simple word search. This example is a little trickier to find in the filters, but you want to select Ingredient --> Vegetables --> Other Vegetables --> Other in addition to typing alfalfa in the text box -- here is the search in the library.

You can also do a word search and put the terms/phrases you want to exclude in quotes and preceded by "-", e.g., alfalfa -"alfalfa sprouts" -"alfalfa seeds" -"alfalfa flowers" -"alfalfa honey" (I included all the EYB ingredients that start with "alfalfa..."). This search will produce a slightly different result set than Christine's example as it retrieves the word "alfalfa" in recipe titles as well as the stand-alone ingredient 'alfalfa'.
