Hi,

I have a lot of books so when I run the search above, I only pull about five results this can't be right. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

Try just searching on 'caneles'. A search of the EYB entire Library of recipes on 'caneles' gets 50 or so results. About 15 of these have 'Bordeaux' in the title, and several more 'Bordelais'. Several more are the same recipe but only called Caneles with no reference to region. Some from each of these categories are online, and wouldn't show up in your search unless you'd added the sites to your Bookshelf.

These cakes are generally spelled as cannelés - when I do a search of the Library I get 447 results with that spelling. When I do the search with the spelling canelé I only get 54 results. According to Wikipedia "In Paris, most of the famous shops such as Ladurée and Pierre Hermé still spell it as "cannelé of Bordeaux" with double 'n'" and that seems to be the way most cookbook authors are spelling it.

Spelling it Canele or Cannele or cannelles I'm still only getting one page of results. I have a lot of French style books. Thanks

Jane,

Are you able to search my shelf??
#6 Posted : Tuesday, September 5, 2017 9:00:32 PM(UTC)

No, I can't search your Bookshelf. But with the number of books you have I would expect a lot more recipes in your search results. We own a similar number of books and I have 399 cannelé on my Bookshelf.

It is possible your browser has cached the search results from your canele search. Do a hard refresh on the search page - CTRL F5 on a PC or or if you have a Mac, hold down Cmd and Shift then press R.

I'm using an iPhone. Do I need to put the accent over the letter e?
#8 Posted : Tuesday, September 5, 2017 9:51:41 PM(UTC)

No, you don't need any accents. The EYB search will recognize words with and without them. Your phone browser can also get stuck. The solution with an iPhone is to delete your cache/history from Tools / Safari / Clear history & website data.

I must be doing something wrong when I search my bookshelf recipes: caneles or canneles I get about 5 results. I did clear my history before I tried again.

Can you try using a different device - computer, tablet or phone - and see if you get the same results? It definitely sounds like there is a browser issue but that would be confirmed by you seeing more results when you use a different device.

Jane,

Thanks I don't know why but on a PC I'm getting the same thing. Even searching the library pulls up only a few more. I must have at least 100 French cooking books and many more pastry books.

Did you click my link to the Library search for cannele which shows 447 results? If you click that and see only a few results then there is something very strange. Can you email us and we will try to look into your Account and see what could be happening.

#13 Posted : Wednesday, September 6, 2017 9:37:54 AM(UTC)
That exact search pulls 18 pages of results. But my own shelf still 5 results.
#14 Posted : Wednesday, September 6, 2017 3:17:48 PM(UTC)

So can you see any difference between my Library search using cannele with 18 pages of results and your own Library search with one page of results? Can you email a screenshot of your Library search that includes the URL at the top and the number of results? It would look like this:

Maybe try this search of your Bookshelf. This is my Bookshelf search which shows 399 results. it should go to your own Bookshelf search and hopefully have more than 25 results. If not, please also send a screenshot of that search.

If any other EYB members are following this thread can anyone else chip in if they also see an issue searching their Bookshelf for cannele recipes?

I used your search on my bookshelf and was taken aback to find the second recipe was for Roast Horse. I wiil email the scan shot to you.
#16 Posted : Wednesday, September 6, 2017 7:06:05 PM(UTC)

Jane,

That link you included yielded one page of 22 results. And the library search looks exactly the sames as your's. The problem is searching my own bookshelf.

Cati - the reason you saw the roast horse recipe was that the French name in the recipe title was Rôti de cheval à la cannelle.

It is always best when searching using the word search to combine it with the filters in the right column - in this case choosing Cakes - small under Recipe types / Baking. Doing that brings the numbers right down in the Library search - to 29 results. I should have realized when adding the link earlier that we would see all French recipes including cinnamon and also all recipes from the indexed blog Cannelle et Vanille. Apologies about that. So actually Eric, you just seeing one page of results for cannele in your own cookbooks now seems quite reasonable. Do you still think there should be more cannele recipes in your books?

#18 Posted : Wednesday, September 6, 2017 10:33:44 PM(UTC)
Absolutely I should. I'm not complaining Jane, just trying to figure this out.
#19 Posted : Wednesday, September 6, 2017 11:12:01 PM(UTC)
Eric, I'm not convinced that your search results are out of line. In a search of the whole Library restricted to recipes in books (vs. online or magazines), there are only 30 recipes for the kind of canneles you're looking for.
#20 Posted : Thursday, September 7, 2017 7:44:25 AM(UTC)

I get 2 recipes when restricted to my books and 12 when online recipes are included so I agree with Ellabee that smaller numbers may be correct.
