I wanted to remind you all that the 20th of April is national Lima Bean Respect Day. I'll be visiting my daughter on the 20th, and I have it in mind to make a Brunswick stew, a concoction of mixed meats, frozen lima beans, canned tomatoes, potatoes, celery, carrots, and frozen corn. Squirrel would be great to have among the meats, but chicken and rabbit will do along with a ham bone or a base of bacon. If you haven't ever made it before, the version in Joseph Dabney's Smokehouse Ham, Spoon Bread, & Scuppernong Wine is a good jumping-off point, but really, there are 60 recipes for Brunswick stew in the Library, look them over for inspiration.
I'm hoping that on the 20th my husband will make his world-famous cornbread (straight out of the 1947 Joy of Cooking) to go with.
Thinking about Lima Bean Respect Day made me wonder whether other people celebrate the various food days, weeks, and months, and wondering that led me to the amazing and wonderful 365 blog. Do you have celebration-of-a-food days in your calendars?
