I know EYB is designed as a database for your cookbooks, but I also see its potential to organize *all* my recipes -- and that goes for ones I've been given by family and friends, and tearsheets from magazines over the years (but from which and what issue, I'm not sure of).I don't see that functionality yet, right?

I'm wondering if there are plans to expand the concept more so you can add random recipes too, and then your whole recipe collection is searchable! Thanks so much. ey

aloha_ey - yes we do plan do add a feature that will allow you to index your own private recipes - clippings, family recipes, etc.  They would then only appear in your own searches.  I can't give you a date when that will be up as we are working on quite a lot of new features now but it will happen.

Yay! Keep up all the good work. Thanks for your reply.

That is great news. I have been entering my own recipes and would love a way to index them.

Second this request. Exactly as you described in your reply, this would fully round out this service. Highly desired feature!

Why not include the option of making members' personal recipes private or available to everyone?  I'm sure there are a lot of excellent cooks on EYB who would enjoy sharing recipes, especially if the recipe is something new and creative!  I may not feel the need to share my tuna and noodle casserole recipe (there are enough already) but the cheesecake I invented inspired by Indian desserts is something I think others might enjoy making!

What do other folks think?

Great ideas, love idea of shared recipes, too.

I just learned about this website today and I was also thinking that this would be perfect if I could enter my own recipies.

As it is, I'm thrilled that someone else is doing the indexing and I no longer need to build my own databaase to help me find recipes.

I wonder if you could release the data input page for us to create our own recipe shelves.  I am going to index scanned notebooks and notebooks of clippings but want to use the same structure I have grown to appreciate in EYB.

I'm not sure what you mean by "release the data input page".  Your data entry would have to be directly into the EYB database for your personal recipes to be part of your searches.  We are just finishing off member indexing now and we are next going to be working on personal recipes as it is linked.  The format will be exactly the same as the recipe indexing we already do.

I hope my request for "release the data input page" and "exactly the same" as the input page would be be the same.  Before this much desired marriage might occur, if we could be creating our files of recipes in the precise EYB format in advance, it would be great.  Meanwhile, we would have wee stand alone databases of us to us.  I am not trying to rush my fences, nor grab proprietary databases, but merely make sure my efforts to organize my own recipe stash are productive.  My efforts to make recipes useful to me would prevent replication effort by others.  If this is not possible, I will sigh deeply and carry on.

It won't be feasible to create your own database offline as we have a huge amount of data you will access to create your records - recipe types, ethnicities and most importantly ingredients (almost 13,000). Because EYB indexing is done as a database rather than straight text entry, you have to select the categories and ingredients from the data files.  In the early days of our indexing we used to email Access databases to the indexers but it was difficult as almost as soon as the database had been emailed it was out of date.

The indexing of personal recipes isn't too far away.  We have almost finished the member indexing feature for books and recipes and personal recipes is a follow-on from that.

Jane,

Just in case I missed it, will you allow us to index our own books soon? Many of my cookbooks are gems and they are not indexed, and most likely won't be, and I'd like to get them included. Is that part of the next phase?

Thanks,

Lucy Zoe

lucyzoe - yes the member indexing project that we have almost finished allows you to index your own books.  It should be up in a day or two, we are just finalizing it.

You guys are the best! It's like Christmas at EYB.

Many, many thanks,

Lucy Zoe
