Site timing out when adding personal recipes   Go to last post Go to last unread

I've been trying to add new personal recipes to my account over the last few days. Every time that I try to save the recipe, the process takes a very long time and often times out without saving the addition. Is anyone else having this difficulty? Thanks in advance for any help.

I haven't found any issue myself with adding personal recipes and no-one else has reported a problem in the last few days. Can you please email us with details of the device and browser you are using then we can try to replicate the problem? In the meantime maybe try doing a hard refresh on the Personal Recipes input screen. Or delete your browser cache. That can often clear this type of issue.

I'm having the same problem today. I added a handful of recipes with no issues, then it starting timing out.

I have tried different browsers - happening in Chrome and Firefox on my Windows 10 laptop. Also happenng in Edge (which I never use).

I rebooted my computer, and one recipe was added. Hooray .... but sadly, the second one hung up again.

I tried refreshing the browser, and miracle, the recipe was added.

I tried a third recipe ... refreshing the browser did nothing ... just hung again.  I used a different browser and logged into EYB there so I could look around on the forum for a bit while waiting ... and eventually the recipe was added.

I did a fourth recipe, thinking perhaps I'd just have to calibrate my patience, and it added straightaway.  I've added a dozen more, with no issues.

I deleted nothing from my browser history, nor cleared my browser cache

Mysterious ...

And of course I spoke too soon. After the last post, the very next recipe that I entered has hung again. Took over a minute, but it finally did get added.

I have cleared out my cache and rebooted my laptop several times without any improvement. The problem is arising when using either Chrome (my preferred browser) or Firefox for me as well. I've done a bit of experimenting this morning and have isolated one thing that may be causing the problem.

1. I entered a recipe and, for the "Source" field, selected an option from the drop-down list of previously entered sources. I then added some information in the "Notes" field and clicked the "Save and New" button. The wheel spun for three minutes and then the "Error! Something's gone wrong here message" appeared. I then clicked on the link in the error message to return to the previous page. What appeared was an input screen for a personal recipe with no information except the source and notes data I had entered. When I checked under the "Recipes" tab, the new recipe wasn't there. I then exited EYB and opened the site again. Lo and behold, the complete new recipe was in my "Recipes" tab.

I repeated this exact same sequence twice and had the same results. In each case, it took three minutes for the error message to appear.

2. I then entered a recipe and entered the source manually, even though it was available in the drop-down list. I also added note information before clicking "Save and New." The recipe was updated instantly. I repeated this sequence two more times and had no issues at all.

So the problem seems to be arising from using the "Source" field drop-down list. Vanessa, could you be doing the same thing when you've had issues?

It's easy enough to manually enter the source although it does slow me down when entering recipes. I'm a bit perplexed about why this is happening now as I've added over 6,100 personal recipes to my account and have used the source drop-down list extensively to assure consistency between entries as well as for speed of entry.

A further update to the mystery. Now the site is timing out some of the time that I use the approach detailed in step two of my previous post. I was doing fine for about five recipes and then it started acting up about fifty percent of the time.

I am passing this to our developer to take a look at.

Thank you!

Hullo redbird. I am mystified how you are able to get a dropdown list of sources. Whenever I add a personal recipe I never get that option.

What I saw was very similar to the behavior described by redbird. (Yes, I’m using the browser history drop down for my source.) I also observed the persistence of the source and the note when returning to an otherwise empty Personal Recipe screen.

But the issues are frustratingly difficult to duplicate. I haven’t been back to try it out since Thursday, but after I’d logged the first few comments here I added another 10-15 recipes (all with the same dropdown-selected source, all with Notes (I had thought for while that maybe it didn’t like Notes with blank lines) ... and I’d get a couple that added super slowly, one that timed out, three that added quickly, etc etc seemingly at random.

Cati, I think the source dropdown is a browser history thing and probably has something to do with which browser you are using and how it is configured.

Today, the very first recipe that I attempted to add took a long time. I did something that I'd had some success with last week - stopped the processing of the page and clicked reload, and BAM it completed (leaving behind the Source and the Note, still displayed on the screen).  For about 20 recipies, they added at a normal speed.

Then, one was slow slow slow ... finally timed out and I got hte error message. But when I checked my recipes (with EYB open in another browser), it was in fact added !! (its possible that I clicked the back arrow on the original page before I checked this ... and once again, the Source and the Note remailed on the form.

This issue still has not been resolved - I hope that some action has been taken...
#14 Posted : Saturday, February 2, 2019 8:10:11 AM(UTC)

I agree. I saw some slight improvement in the week after I initially posted; however, it was terribly sporadic. Most of the time, there was a delay of at least two minutes per recipe. I haven't tried to add additional personal recipes in the last few weeks because it is simply too frustrating and time consuming. That's really unfortunate because I still have a substantial backlog (probably more than 2,000 recipes) that I would like to enter.

Our developer has been unable to replicate this issue - and neither can I.  If the delay in loading a new Personal Recipe happens again for any member, please immediately email with details of the recipe title. I can then give the developer the details and he can check to see if there is any error message on the site at that time. It is very hard for us to fix an issue if we cannot replicate it.

I have experienced this a few times. Each time it has been when adding an online recipe with a link. One time, after experiencing the time-out, I tried again to enter just the title of the recipe and save, and this worked! But then it timed out when I tried to edit the recipe to add ingredients. Then a few days later, the recipe appeared on my bookshelf. So maybe when it said it had timed out, it had actually saved? (I will add that tonight the personal recipe function is working perfectly!)

annaschmidt - out of interest, why would you add an online recipe as a Personal Recipe rather than usng the Bookmarklet to add it to the Library (and your Bookshelf)?

#18 Posted : Sunday, March 10, 2019 7:30:47 PM(UTC)

Our developer thinks he has identified the issue and fixed it. It was a loop being created when eggs were added as an ingredient. Or at least I thought it was fixed but a member reported today that she got an error message (though immediately, not after timing-out) when adding a Personal Recipe. Any other member still having issues?

Have just tried again - no difference; same error message immediately

But a different recipe worked fine.
