I've commented in the past that I can't get the Bookmarklet to behave in an even remotely acceptable manner and now I have one more gripe: I am trying to get this recipe:

http://www.lottieanddoof.../lottie-doof-spilt-milk/

but the bookmarklet (or your site) says:

We don’t link to recipe aggregator sites, please go to original recipe and try again.

The recipe you tried to add was: http://www.lottieanddoof.../lottie-doof-spilt-milk/

HUH? I love your site and could not live without it but the Bookmarklet is a dud.

I just tried to add that particular recipe and got the same result and then tried the bookmarklet on another recipe from another website and it worked as it should. I think the issue might be with the website you were trying to index the recipe from - maybe it has some code that blocks the bookmarklet - rather than an issue with the bookmarklet itself.

apattin - there are a few reasons why we may blacklist blogs or websites so recipes cannot be added with the Bookmarklet from that site:

  • where the site is an aggregator site that takes recipes from other online sources. We want members to add recipes from the original source so the actual recipe creator gets the traffic.

  • where a site reproduces recipes from cookbooks without the permission of the publisher i.e. in breach of copyright law.

  • where the blogger has requested that we do not index their recipes.

The 3rd reason is why we do not allow recipes to be added from Lottie and Doof. We contacted Tim as we wanted to create a complete index of his blog recipes but he refused and said he did not want to participate in any way. He is actually the only blogger to ever have said this. So if you would like his recipes to be part of your recipe searches I suggest you contact him explaining why it would be useful for you and maybe he will change his mind.

I'm not clear what you mean by "I can't get the Bookmarklet to behave in an even remotely acceptable manner". I can only find one post in the Forum from you on the topic of the bookmarklet where you complained that not enough data is imported by the Bookmarklet. We explained the reason why - EYB is a database and it is very difficult to map random text into a database. We import what we can - usually the recipe title and URL plus sometimes the photo - and it is then up to the member to add the ingredients and category tags. We then proofread all additions and add any photos that did not load. We get hundreds of online recipes added to the site every week so it doesn't seem to be a dud for other members.

Jane, I've never had any problem with the bookmarklet except in one case with this recipe:

https://www.pressurecook...rk-hock-pressure-cooker/

You do have 77 other recipes from this site indexed. The error message just said something has gone wrong and to contact the site if it continues and I have tried several times with the same result.

chawkins - it seems that site may have introduced some block since we added the recipes. I tried importing several recipes on the site and got the same issue every time. I have emailed the owners of the site and will post here again if I hear back from them.

Thanks, Jane.

Thank you all for the information. I now know that Lottie & Doof is a problem site for EYB, and not a bookmarklet issue. And I also now know that most of the time (in my case, all the time) the bookmarklet does not find the ingredient list and fails to get the images. That's not ideal, of course, but better to know that it works this way for most people. Maybe there is a new bookmarklet version in the future?

Also, knowing that you take the trouble to proofread user recipes is reassuring. Good work!

I would be dead in the water without your site. :))

Many thanks

I added this recipe via bookmarklet on the 20th of December last year, it has yet to appear anywhere, what happened to it? Bookmarklet won't let me reenter it because it is still under review.

chawkins, apologies for the delay. We're in the process of transitioning from our long-time Bookmarklet staffer to her replacement which has resulted in a backlog of Bookmarklet-submitted recipes, but we expect to be up and running smoothly very soon. However, the reason that Walnut-raisin cake recipe you submitted hasn't been approved is because it comes from Food.com, which is one of the sites EYB has blacklisted as explained in Jane's response to "apattin" 2 years ago. Unfortunately, the block on Food.com is not working properly, perhaps because the site has recently transitioned to a new platform.

I'd suggest you add the Walnut-raisin cake as a Personal Recipe so it will be part of your recipe searches but not subject to EYB review or accessible to other EYB members.

I did not quite understand the aggregate site/food.com issues. Now I understand.  Thank you Deborah. Most of the recipes there are copied from other sources, but there are around 5% which are original recipes submitted by members in earlier times.  Those are some of the best ones (goldmine of recipes I use including my own :) there but no way one can see which those are unless you knew some of the people submitting the recipes and reading the recipe introduction.  I think food.com deleted those introduction section since they were so keen on destroying the site.  Luckily I copied all the best original recipes into pepperplate when they announced they were transitioning.
