Kindle recommended a book that I'd already read ie bought via kindle store. Normally Kindle would tell you you'd already got it but this time it didn't. After a bit of digging it appears that the publisher has changed the Forward and cover so it seems to think its a new book..... eeeek!

I then found a book that Kindle says I bought on 21st October 2021 yet the 'Buy Now' button was still active. How can you have 2 copies of the same book on my Kindle account?

This morning I find what appear to be 2 completely identical versions of 'Basque' by Jose Pizarro one for £12.36 and the other for £5.03. Its only when you go into minute detail you'd notice the first is based on the original 2016 edition and the second on a 2021 re-edition that's had 75 pages removed.

Looks like I'm going to have to be far more careful when buying kindle content!

Unfortunately, this problem is not unique to Kindle. It occurs with the Apple bookstore as well, and even here on Eat Your Books. ISBN cataloging numbers change with edition and the systems aren't smart enough to catch inconsequentlal changes. Sometimes there is a good reason for the different editions (new editions) and sometimes not (hardback vs. paperback, like you can tell the difference in an ebook).

I recently was surprised that I was the only Eat Your Books member with a particular Graham Kerr cookbook. He was very big in his day. And it was a hardback cookbook published by Doubleday! I dug a little deeper... and there is an entry for a spiral bound version of that cookbook, and a number of members have that editon.

Jamie Oliver's "Comfort Food" has different subtitles in the UK and US editions and far more folks own that UK edition (home field advantage for Jamie I assume).

And more generally with both Kindle and Apple iBooks, I have found that books I know I purchased, later fail to show up in my library. I'm guessing that an edition is replaced by a subsequent edition and the older is no longer in the catalog. I have managed to get this straightened out when it was important, but still very annoying (and time consuming). Hopefully this is all 'growing pains' and the publishing industry will get it's act in gear.

I have to be really careful as kindle doesn't recognise that I bought a load of cookbooks when I lived in Germany from Amazon.de and when I lived in Canada or the US on Amazon.com - so I always double check on EYB when a cookbook is suggested for me just in case I already have it. It would have been a lot simpler if they'd let me stick to the Amazon.co.uk store, but I'm sure there's some legal reason for forcing me to switch.
