I understand why sites of current and former print magazines want users to subscribe for access to content. It seems now Food 52 has started requiring a (free) subscription to unlock recipes. Of course no subscription needed to access their pricy merchandise in their shop. It is not a blog per se but a commercial enterprise with a shop and advertising. They already have a lot of digital information about me, I have no intention of giving them more. I’m happy to spend the money on a special site like EYB.

I thought it was ever thus. Whenever I have gone to Food 52 following links from their Instagram account the content has always been behind a paywall or maybe it was because I was trying to access them from the UK.

So has Two Peas in Their Pod, and that's nowhere near as big as Food52 (or Bon Appétit and Epicurious). Pretty soon everything will be behind a paywall, or a registration wall, except stuff from those who have an axe to grind.

Just had a look and no need for a subscription here. Wonder if it's a US thing at the moment and will be coming to the UK/Europe in due course.

With Food52, 'twasn't ever thus, but it is now. I'm already subscribed.
