Advice on ice cream machines...   Go to last post Go to last unread

I recently decided to replace a very old Phillips Ice cream machine with a Cuisinart 2 lt sorbet and ice cream machine... wondered if any others have the same machine (mine's red if that means anything).. This one is incredibly noisy - as in, it's impossible to carry on a conversation for the 25 - 40 minutes needed to churn 2 litres unless you move to a totally different room in the house! Cuisinart Australia tell me the model is "noisy" and don't see it as an issue worthy or warranty return.. anybody else got a comment on the product.. or a recommendation for a quiet machine?????

I have a Gelato Chef which I have had for 15 years or so and it is also noisy.  But when I balance that against having to have freezer space for the tub of a model that does not have a freezer unit built in, I can put up with the noise.  I love that my machine allows me to make ice cream with no advance planning.  I just stick it in another room.

I have a Cuisinart as well & I though the noise is annoying, I've found it works well, so I am happy with it considering the price. I'm pretty sure the quieter ones are quite a lot more expensive, so for me I'll take the trade-off until I'm ready for a major upgrade (which probably won't be any time soon!)

The Kitchn has some reviews here and America's Test Kitchen has some comprehensive reviews as well including a noise rating here -- you do need to be registered to view the ATK article, but you do not need a paid premium membership.

I have one of these too, and I've not had a lot of success with it. The noise doesn't bother me because I'm pretty deaf. (There are some pluses in deafness!) I'm a bit sorry I didnt lash out and get the sort which doesnt need prechilling. I initally made the mistake of putting everything into the bowl before starting it turning, so I ended up with a thin layer of frozen cream on the bowl surface while the rest just churned around and around. Now that I've read the instructions a bit better, the last batch where I poured the liquid slowly into the bowl after the curning began, was much better.

I have noticed that at least one of the higher end mixers has an icecream bowl, which doesnt eliminate the need to take up freezer space but it does reduce the number of gadgets in your cupboard by one. I'd be interested to know if anyone has one of these, and how well it works.
