I have several books so far I cannot find using the Library option for adding.  For example, I have a book titled Treasures of Sicilian Cuisine, isbn 8875080127.  Can you please tell me why some of the books are not found using the book option?  This one was a gift to me from my Sicilian friend and is written in English.  Also, why are some of my books missing isbn?  They were not printed  outside the US.  Most of the ones I am finding I cannot find are 40 years old or older books.  Thank you.

Can't help with your Sicilian book, but the older books don't have Isbns because the system was introduced after they were printed, in the 1970s if I remember correctly (I'm a retired librarian, so I have an interest in such esoteric things!). I assume EYB is picking up books from sources such as Amazon, so it's quite possible that some simply aren't listed, as they are out of print (and therefore not for sale) or for some other reason. I have quite a few too, but mostly old or very limited publications, for instance 'the Charleville School of the Air Cookbook'. Which has a recipe involving mince which my husband likes.

Thank you Margaretsmall, that now explain the problems I'm having.  I said several books, but so far it's more like 15-18% of books I do not find.  I have started cooking in the 60's so that explains why I can't find the isbns.  Is there any way we can add those books which are not in the library?  That would be great :-)

Margaretsmall is correct that books printed prior to 1970 do not have ISBN numbers.  We currently get our books data from Nielsen and Amazon and the data is matched by ISBN.  So we cannot currently import any book data if there is no ISBN.  There is an exception made if you want to index a book that doesn't have an ISBN.  We have to add all the data manually which is why we can only do it if the book is being indexed.

If you want to index one of your books you need to send us the book title, subtitle, author, format, number of pages, publisher, country of pubication and date of publication.  Also if possible a scan or photo of the book cover - don't worry about size or cropping as we can do that.

Rinshin - do you know that if you ever cannot find a book in the EYB Library, you can request that we add it by importing the ISBN in Import Books? This is explained in Help.  If we can get the data from Amazon then we will import it and it will be added to the Library and automatically to your Bookshelf.  I have added the book you mention Treasures of Sicilian Cuisine so you can now add it to your Bookshelf.  As long as you have an ISBN number then you can request that we add any book.

Thank you Jane for adding the book.  I used the import function for books with isbn, but ones without I did not know if there was any way we can add the books.  But, it's great we can contact you to add the books.  I don't mind doing the index once I finish adding all the books I have.   I've actually only about 20% done so far.

Hi everyone,

This has been very helpful to read - I have a similar experience with the book 'Marths Goes Green' (ISBN: 978-0-646-50794-1) which, of all my cookbooks, is my most used! I have tried to import the ISBN, and would be happy to index it myself, but I am not having any success with getting it to appear. Would it be possible to have the book added?

Thank you for your help

Bec - if you want us to index a book that you cannot import (which was because the book is not listed on Amazon) then email us at [email protected] and we will add it.  I have now added it for you so you can request to index it.  I could not find a cover image online so if possible can you scan the cover or take a photo and email it to us.  Thanks!

Wow - thank you so much Jane! That was very fast and I really appreciate it. I'll get a cover photo emailed through shortly.

Thanks again & best wishes

Bec
