We can't add a magazine to the database ourselves. Right?   Go to last post Go to last unread

My EYB magazine collection is so small that I don't even know the answer to this question. We're not able to add magazines to the database the same way that we can add books. Right? Even if they're like special edition magazines? Today I bought a copy of an A360 Media Special (ISSN 725274163304) called Avocado Recipes: 73 Ways to Eat This Superfood.

You can add a magazine to the EYB Library. Use Member Added Books, accessed from the My Bookshelf tab. We will change it to a magazine when we approve it. The reason you cannot add magazines using Import Books, is that Import Books uses ISBN numbers to import the book data from Amazon. ISBN numbers are unique for a book edition, Magazines do not have unique ID numbers - the number on the barcode of a magazine identifies the magazine and the month so it gets repeated a year later.

Thanks, Jane. I'm aware of the Member Added Books feature, but I just haven't had time to try it out--so I didn't know that it could be used for magazines too.

Sorry--another dumb question, and I searched the forum and the help and I still don't see the answer. In the forum I see mostly questions about how one adds magazines to their bookshelf or why certain issues already in the database aren't yet indexed.

But what are the overall rules regarding adding magazines to the EYB database in general? Aside from being food-related, there are no other rules? Because I was looking for an issue of Magnolia Journal in EYB, and I see that there are some issues in the database, but only from 2021--nothing more recent.

You can add any food magazines you wish to the Library. But that doesn't mean we will index them. Whether we index a magazine is dependent on how many members add it to their Bookshelf. Magnolia Journal was added by very few members after we added those 2021 issues so we never indexed it.

Thanks, Jane. Yes, I wasn't expecting it to be indexed--I just wanted to add it to my library. For some reason, though, I thought that magazines get added automatically or that we were only permitted to add issues of magazine titles already in the EYB database and not new magazine titles.

That used to be the case before we added the Add Member Books feature where members can import data for books not on Amazon (or magazines). This has been a popular feayure with more than 4,000 books and magazines added by members. If anyone would like to learn more about this, this is the Help section.
