Time Life Foods of the World?   Go to last post Go to last unread

Sorry if this has been asked before; I guess when you have added a forum search feature that won't be a problem!  I have all the recipe books of the Time Life Foods of the World series (yes, I subscribed when I was in high school), and was wondering if there are plans to add them to the database.  I'm sure I'm not the only one who uses them; from those countries I've visited I've found them to be quite accurate, though of course we didn't have access to the wealth of ingredients we do today!

If you want a book added to the Library which isn't there, import the ISBNs using the Import Books feature. Once we have set up new affiliations with booksellers stocking older and out-of-print cookbooks, we will add all the requested books to the Library and the ones you requested will automatically go onto your Bookshelf.

If the books are in the Library but not yet indexed, request index them and that will help them move up the indexing chart. We plan to add an indexing interface so members can index their own books if they wish. Part of that will allow you to see where on the indexing list the book you are interested in is. If it is low down you may wish to index it yourself. We don't have any of the Time Life books on our chart at the moment though as our membership expands that may change.

Thanks, Jane. What a job you've taken on!

Okay, the Time Life cookbooks seem to pre-date the ISBN system.  I will do some research on this.

I'd be interested in adding other Time Life series, too, like the "Healthy Home Cooking..." series and "The Good Cook..." A few of them came up, but most of them weren't in the database.

Okay, apparently there is no easy resolution to this.  Books published before 1970 don't have ISBN numbers, period.  I don't think these books were ever reprinted, either, so they just don't have them.  Is there an alternate way we could possibly directly input the info?  There is plenty of data in the Library of Congress about other book details.  I would certainly volunteer for that, though scanning the indexes would possibly be another matter.  Maybe we could form a small committee or something to tackle this.

We'd love to have help with the older books.  First off though we have to change the inputting of new books so that an alternative number can be used such as the LCCC.  We need the same adjustment to be able to add magazines as they have a ISSN number.  Once we have got that set up for the database we then need an inputting form so members can add the details of their own books that do not have ISBN numbers.

This is on our to-do list though not a high priority at the moment.  It will get done but we have quite a few more urgent projects first.

I was able to find all of the time life books in the world series in the data base for cookbooks except Cooking of Vienna's Empire.  All of both the Healthy and the Good Cook series are there as well.  It took some work though. I started with entering "time life" and found many.  Then I searched "time-life". I first searched by author, by title, and by portion of the title. I am not sure this will work but you could try looking on my bookshelf "lorloff" and you can find them in the data base that way.  Hope it helps.  I do not think any of the books for these three series are indexed.

Hi Lorloff,
I was able to find all of my Time Life books, using searching techniques like yours, except for two: The Good Cook Soups and The Good Cook Cakes. And I agree, it did take some work.

The books data in the EYB Library is from a data supplier and we have found there can be quite a bit of variation in book titles and author names.  We are currently in the process of correcting those errors but with 80,000 books and 35,000 authors, this is a massive task.  If you ever spot any errors, it helps if you let us know by clicking Report an error at the bottom of the page.

We do intend to sign up some more book-seller affiliates which will allow us to add all the titles that members have not been able to add to their Bookshelves.  Make sure you import the ISBNs using the Import books feature and then when the book is added it will automatically go onto your Bookshelf.

I will try to tidy up the Time Life book titles this weekend.

I also have the complete Foods of the World set and managed to find many in the database under the individual volume authors. Time-Life wasn't always in the record. But the really tricky part is that so many of the recipes were only in the accompanying spiral-bound supplement. Most used book dealers log and sell those separately.

Their Great Meals in Minutes is another Time-Life series where the series name isn't usually in the record.

Many of those pre-1970 books, including the Time Life Series of Good Cooking have nine-digit ISBNs. Starting with a zero validates the ISBN. As to when EYB gets around to indexing them is another matter.

In many cases in The Good Cook Series, the ISBN is printed on the back cover, however I have found at least one with the wrong ISBN. The ISBN for Cakes is actually that of Candy in the same series. The ISBN is also at the bottom of the last printed page, and in the case of Cakes, is correct.

That's useful to know warner, though will be a pain for anyone importing their collection using a barcode scanner.  I have now standardized all the Time-Life book titles - they all have the author Time-Life Books and the series title is included in the title, e.g. The Good Cook: Cakes.  So, searching by Time-Life Books will produce all the books listed in the EYB Library.

As always, if you find you own any that we don't have listed, import the ISBNs using the Import Books feature, and when we add them to the Library, they will automatically go onto your Bookshelf.

It's taken a while but we've finally sorted out the Time Life series "Foods of the World".  If you type "Foods of the World"  and "Time Life Books" into the search box you'll see all 27 of them listed.

Or you can click on this link:

I think this is the most comprehensive list anywhere on the web - it took a while to hunt down all the covers.  There are probably other versions that should be linked - let me know if you know of any.

Some are on the list to be indexed soon, and others are almost on enough Bookshelves.

Update on the Time-Life Foods of the World series --  The first two of these books are now on EYB: The Cooking of Italy, and The Cooking of Provincial France.  More to come shortly as two of our indexers own almost the entire collection of companion recipe booklets (which is the volume we're indexing as it contains more recipes than the hardcover main book).
