Pie-in-the-sky wish list for EYB...   Go to last post Go to last unread

I was just thinking this weekend about a couple "dream" features I'd love to see on EYB someday...I don't have high expectations of them happening, mind you, but these are a few things I'd find seriously useful (or just fun, being a bit of a statistics nerd).

1. A way to see all of the ingredients used in a cookbook in some kind of list, perferably sorted/sortable in frequency of appearance.

Why? Because sometimes when I get a new cookbook and I am excited to try a number of recipes in it soon, I realize that my pantry is missing certain spices or other staples that I'll need (this usually happens when I'm trying a new-to-me cuisine like Korean or Japanese hot pot, for instance.) It would be useful when putting together a shopping or ordering list to be able to scan through at least frequently used ingredients so I don't forget to pick up something I'll need.

2. A way to build a "personal pantry" of staple ingredients I always have on hand in my kitchen, and to search for recipes that make use of them.

Much like we have our personal library of cookbooks and recipes. Why? Because it might make it easier for me to come up with ideas when I'm not sure what I want to make, instead of trying to list 3 or 4 ingredients randomly in the recipe search box, hoping something comes up that sounds good or possible when it turns out I don't have another 5 or 6 ingredients the recipe needs.

Anyway those are just two random thoughts I've had; anyone else want to add their dream features to this thread?

My dream feature would be to have every online recipe added to EYB also added to my bookshelf.  I usually end up doing 2 searches on EYB - one on my bookshelf and one in the library for online recipes.  My dream feature would give me all the same results but in one search.

Thanks for the feedback stephdavis and nicolepellegrini.  I have added all your suggestions to our (very long!) development to-do list.  That doesn't mean it will happen (or even be feasible) but it means we will consider them when we are looking at improvements to that area of the site in the future.

Just thought of something else - it would be great if once you've done a search you could delete the results you are not interested in, just leaving a core list to consider.

I would like to incorporate some of the features of the site 'plan to eat' (plantoeat.com), especially the building of a weekly menu and ingredients contained in the recipes that are planned for that week.  In my perfect world, I would join plantoeat and eatyourbooks together and take the best features from both.

I'd like to see a wishlist of books to buy (or hint at for gifts), kinda like bookmarking books you dont own yet.  I often see a recipe reviewed, click on the book link and think "I'd like to buy that" and then dont always follow through.  Or maybe that's a good thing?

Karina, be careful what you wish for- lol!

You can currently use bookmarks to make a list of books you want- of course you would then need to find a way to exclude that list from any recipe searches.

On my wishlist would be more flexibility in adding/removing individual recipes from my bookshelf. For example, I detest bananas, and would love to remove every recipe with bananas from my bookshelf. Of course, I can simply use searches to avoid those recipes for now. To me, the most important change is still enabling communication between members (commenting on notes and individual communications both).

TrishCP am I missing something in my searches when I want to exclude something?  I have always wished that in the filters you could either tell EYB to not only include something but also to exclude something.  If the little pluses could also be minuses that would be a big help.  I just tried with berries and I can search for only recipes with berries but I am not sure how to search for recipes without berries.

You can!  Add berries to your search criteria.  Then, click on the green plus sign next to the berries in the search criteria.  It will turn to a red minus sign, meaning that it will not show recipes containing berries.

Thank you Laura!. Sometimes excluding things gets you where you want to go faster than including things.
